Atlético Madrid Draws Line on Barcelona in Álvarez Saga
Atlético Madrid have set a hard deadline of Friday for a resolution to the Julián Álvarez saga, drawing a bright red line through any prospect of the forward joining Barcelona – and leaving the door open for Arsenal.
Chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has made the club’s stance on Barcelona brutally clear, insisting Álvarez will “never, ever” be sold to the Catalan side. Atlético’s board backed that position in a strongly worded statement, accusing Barça of failing to act in a “professional, ethical and respectful manner” and confirming there would be “zero consideration” of any deal with them.
The message to Barcelona is simple: forget it.
Arsenal, though, are a different story. The 26-year-old is the Gunners’ top attacking target and the club are closely tracking developments, ready to pounce if the numbers and timing work. Atlético have imposed today’s deadline so they still have time to move for a replacement if Álvarez leaves.
The tension around the player is already spilling onto the pitch. He has now missed two consecutive training sessions, was told there is a “zero per cent chance” of joining Barcelona, and was loudly booed by sections of the home crowd during a substitute appearance in the draw with Villarreal on Sunday. A midweek absence was officially put down to “illness”. The clock is ticking loudly in Madrid.
Liverpool close on Barcola as Gakpo future hangs in balance
On Merseyside, Liverpool are moving aggressively. The club have agreed a £100m fee, with a further £20m in add-ons, with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola after the French side softened their demands for the 23-year-old forward.
Barcola is one of at least two wide players Andoni Iraola wants through the door before the window shuts. The other priority is Ismaila Sarr. Liverpool have already seen an opening offer of around £50m rejected by Crystal Palace but are not walking away from the deal, even after abandoning a move for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh due to the south-coast club’s resistance.
All of that has immediate consequences for Cody Gakpo. Tottenham and Manchester City are both circling, and while Liverpool would prefer to keep depth in attack, Iraola refused to offer any guarantees.
“When the market is open, you cannot guarantee anything with anyone,” he said on Thursday, leaving Gakpo’s future hanging in the balance. If Barcola and Sarr both arrive, Liverpool’s stance on the Dutchman could shift quickly.
Chelsea ready to cash in on Enzo as Martínez deal agreed
Across the league, Manchester City remain locked in talks to sign Enzo Fernández from Chelsea. The London club are open to a sale at the right price, but only if it allows them to reshape the squad in the final days of the window.
Chelsea have already moved decisively in one key position. A £7.5m agreement is in place with Aston Villa for goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, a deal that follows a costly pair of errors from Robert Sánchez in Monday’s chaotic 3-2 win at Fulham. Martínez’s arrival would instantly turn up the pressure on Sánchez’s status as No 1.
Enzo’s situation is more complex. If City push, Chelsea could be tempted – and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is already being lined up as a potential target should Enzo depart.
Rashford’s future still uncertain as Fenerbahce circle

Gazzetta report that Fiorentina are in negotiations over a £4.2m loan deal, which would include an option to buy next summer. For Zirkzee, it could be the chance to reset his career in Serie A rather than drift on the fringes at Old Trafford.
