Aston Villa Signs Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG for €55 Million

Aston Villa have struck a deal with Paris Saint-Germain to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye, snatching the 18-year-old from under Liverpool’s nose.

Liverpool had tracked the Senegal international as a possible long-term successor to Mohamed Salah and explored a move earlier in the summer. PSG’s price, though, proved a major stumbling block. The French champions quoted the Anfield club around €70 million, a figure that was expected to come down but still high enough for Liverpool to walk away rather than get dragged into a lengthy negotiation.

Instead, Liverpool poured their efforts into landing top target Bradley Barcola. While they chased the Lyon forward, the door opened for Villa.

Unai Emery’s side moved quickly. Villa had already shown strong interest in Mbaye in January, only to be rebuffed when PSG refused to sell. This time the situation is very different. Mbaye wants regular minutes, PSG are ready to cash in, and Villa are prepared to pay.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have agreed a €55 million fee with PSG, helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. The transfer is now being finalised, with Mbaye expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park.

For an 18-year-old, his CV is already stacked. Mbaye has made 42 senior appearances for PSG and featured for Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter and at the World Cup this summer. He broke through early, handled the spotlight, then hit a wall: his minutes dropped sharply in the second half of last season after returning from AFCON, sharpening his desire for a new challenge.

Emery wants him to play a major role. The Spaniard has been keen to add another winger to his squad and sees Mbaye as a central piece of that plan rather than a developmental afterthought.

Villa had also held talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, but the indications are that the Portugal international has opted for Galatasaray instead, unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal. That setback could have left Villa scrambling.

Instead, the agreement for Mbaye lands at exactly the right moment for a club intent on staying in the Premier League’s top bracket and arming Emery with the kind of explosive wide threat that can change games and seasons.
