Aston Villa are preparing for life with a new first-choice goalkeeper, with journalist Sam Tighe insisting Zion Suzuki has been signed to take the No.1 shirt – and leaving serious questions over what comes next for Emi Martinez.
Suzuki signed as Villa’s new No.1
Villa have long maintained they wanted to keep Martinez, regardless of any competition brought in. The World Cup winner has attracted steady interest over recent seasons, yet has remained rooted at Villa Park.
This summer feels different.
Japan international Suzuki has now been confirmed as a Villa player, and Tighe is adamant this is not a depth signing. Speaking on Sky Sports at 11:40 on Wednesday, August 19, he underlined that the 21-year-old has arrived with a clear promise.
“Villa are bringing in Suzuki despite the fact that Martinez’s move to Juventus failed. He’s being brought in on the condition of being No.1,” Tighe said.
That demand has already shaped Suzuki’s market. Tighe pointed to the collapse of a proposed move to PSG, explaining that the goalkeeper wanted guarantees.
“There was reporting that Suzuki’s move to PSG fell down for three reasons, one of which was he wasn’t particularly happy to be moved around on loan or not being given No.1 assurances.
“I think Suzuki has a very clear idea of what he’s going to be doing at Aston Villa.”
Villa, then, have made their choice in goal. Now they must deal with the consequences.
Martinez future clouded by lack of obvious suitors
Once Juventus fell away, the path for Martinez became far less clear. Tighe painted a picture of a market where a high-level goalkeeper could find himself short of elite options.
“Villa need to find a solution for Emi Martinez. It doesn’t take a lot of money here, I think, to get him. The wages might be a problem. The real concern for Martinez and Villa is that I’m looking around for options and I’m struggling to find them.”
Juventus, long linked, are “off the table.” Atletico Madrid could, in theory, re-emerge after showing interest last summer, but Jan Oblak still blocks that route.
Martinez has already turned down one lucrative escape hatch.
“Martinez didn’t want to go to Saudi last season, I don’t know if that changes this time around. Turkey’s always brought up but the big four in Turkey have all got goalkeepers.
“He’s not going to go there when Ederson plays for Fenerbahce, Besiktas have just signed Alexander Nubel, for example. I’m scratching around for options here, as the club will be.”
The message is stark: Villa are no longer waiting on the market to decide their fate. They have moved.
“But looks like they’re pressing on with Suzuki regardless and they’re trying to take control of the situation and not be caught short if Emi Martinez decides that he wants to go.”
For the first time in his Villa career, Martinez is no longer the automatic answer. He is a problem to solve.
Villa eye £50m move for Pape Sarr
The goalkeeper reshuffle is only part of a broader summer push. Villa are still active in the market, and attention has turned to Tottenham midfielder Pape Sarr.
According to Caught Offside, Spurs would be prepared to listen if a suitable offer landed, with several clubs already circling. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli have made an enquiry, while Villa and Brentford are tracking the Senegal international closely.
Earlier suggestions put Sarr’s price at around £30million. That figure has shifted.
Tottenham now value the 21-year-old closer to £50million, buoyed by a strong contract position and no pressing need to sell. Sarr is tied to the club until 2030, giving Spurs leverage and forcing any bidder, Villa included, to pay a premium.
