Aston Villa Eyes Joao Palhinha Amid Midfield Crisis

Aston Villa’s pursuit of Joao Palhinha has moved into the open, with the club’s hierarchy making no attempt to hide how badly they want the Bayern Munich midfielder – or why.

Speaking to Bild after Villa’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Bayern in Hong Kong, director of football Damian Vidagany cut straight to the point. Amadou Onana is out for the entire season. The gap in Unai Emery’s midfield is real, and Villa believe Palhinha is the man to fill it.

“We need a player for midfield because Amadou Onana is out for the entire season and Joao Palhinha is a very good player who would fit our plans,” Vidagany said, before making one thing clear: talks are happening, but a deal is not done. “We are in talks, but there is currently no agreement.”

Respectful courtship, hard numbers

This is no hostile raid. Vidagany was at pains to underline the respect between the clubs, calling Bayern and Villa “friendly” and praising their relationship with Max Eberl, Christoph Freund and the rest of the German champions’ hierarchy. The message was diplomatic: Villa want Palhinha, but they will not be drawn into a public tug-of-war.

Behind the politeness lies a hard negotiation.

Bayern are understood to want around €25 million for the Portugal international. It is a stark drop from the €50m they paid Fulham in 2024, a figure that underlined how highly he was rated when he arrived in Munich. That valuation has not been justified on the pitch. Palhinha has struggled to make himself indispensable, spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, and saw a permanent move to north London fall away.

Now he is back in Bavaria, grouped with returning loanees Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza. Bayern’s stance on that trio could hardly be clearer. “The future for those three will not be at Bayern Munich,” Eberl said at the end of July, adding that anyone choosing to stay would find it “relatively tough and complicated” with no major role on offer.

The pressure to sell is obvious. So is the opportunity for Villa.

Villa’s pitch: project over paycheque

Vidagany did not just talk about money. He sold a project.

“I believe Aston Villa would be a great club for the player,” he said, before laying out the context of the Premier League landscape. Six or seven clubs, he pointed out, have bigger budgets than Villa. Yet for four straight seasons, they have reached European competition.

That is not a coincidence. It is, in his words, “down to our project, our work as a collective and the tactical influence of Unai Emery, who in my eyes is one of the best coaches in the world.”

That is the hook for Palhinha: a club that cannot outspend England’s financial giants but consistently punches its way into Europe under a coach with a proven track record of elevating players and teams. For a 29-year-old midfielder whose Bayern adventure has stalled, the promise of a defined role in a structured, ambitious side is powerful.

Competition and consequences

Villa are not alone at the table. Benfica and Newcastle United are also credited with interest in Palhinha, and their situations give the chase extra edge.

Newcastle have already lost Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and are now apparently on the brink of selling Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal. Offloading two central pillars in one summer would force them back into the market. A combative, Premier League-proven midfielder like Palhinha fits that need.

Benfica, meanwhile, can offer a return to Portugal and Champions League exposure, a different kind of pull.

For Bayern, the equation is simpler. They want a clean break for Palhinha, Boey and Zaragoza. For Palhinha, the choice is more nuanced: stay and fade into the background in Munich, or jump now into a project built around him.

Villa have made their intentions clear. They need a midfielder. They have a coach who thrives with intelligent, disciplined operators at the base of his system. They see Palhinha as that piece.

The question now is whether their belief – and their bid – will be enough to prise him away and anchor a midfield rebuilt on urgency, not luxury.
