Aston Villa's £18m Bid for Harwood-Bellis Rejected as Konsa Transfer Looms

Aston Villa’s defensive rebuild has hit its first major snag.

Southampton have rejected an offer worth around £18m plus add-ons for centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, with the south coast club holding out for a fee closer to £25m.

Villa’s interest is no surprise. Ezri Konsa, a cornerstone of Unai Emery’s back line, is set to join Arsenal in a deal expected to exceed £50m, leaving a sizeable hole at the heart of the Europa League winners’ defence. Villa want Harwood-Bellis to help fill it.

The 22-year-old has been a central figure at Southampton since arriving from Manchester City in 2023, initially on loan. He has already broken into the senior England setup, winning his first cap in a 2024 Nations League game against the Republic of Ireland, and his stock has continued to rise.

Southampton know it. After finishing fourth in the Championship last season before the Spygate scandal abruptly ended their play-off hopes, they are under no pressure to sell on the cheap. Their stance is clear: serious money only.

Harwood-Bellis came through the Manchester City academy but never made a first-team appearance, instead building his reputation away from the Etihad. Now, with Premier League clubs circling, that education is starting to command a premium.

Villa, meanwhile, are trying to reshape a squad that has already been pulled apart at the edges since that Europa League triumph in May. Key names have gone: Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, Lucas Digne to Paris St-Germain.

On top of that, speculation continues around two of their biggest pillars. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Premier League-era record scorer Ollie Watkins have both been linked with moves away, casting a shadow over what should be a summer of consolidation.

The club have not stood still. This week brought the arrivals of goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri, adding fresh legs and competition in two key areas. Earlier in the window, Villa also moved for midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves and forward Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, signalling a broader refresh of Emery’s options.

But the spine of any Emery side starts at centre-back. With Konsa heading for north London and Southampton standing firm over Harwood-Bellis, Villa now face a familiar transfer-window question: pay up for their top target, or pivot quickly before the market moves without them.
