Arsenal Eyeing Victor Osimhen for Title Defence
Arsenal’s title defence began with a swagger on the pitch and a standoff off it.
A 3-0 dismantling of newly promoted Coventry City on Friday night underlined the champions’ authority on opening day. Yet behind the scenes, the real battle is financial, and it centres on Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen on Arsenal’s radar – but at their price
Arsenal want quality, not volume, this summer. That message has been clear since they lifted the Premier League trophy and moved quickly to reshape the squad.
Bruno Guimaraes has arrived from Newcastle United. Christos Tzolis has come in from Club Brugge. Christian Norgaard and Leandro Trossard have gone the other way, sacrificed to keep the squad lean and elite.
Now the focus is a No. 9. A prolific one. Osimhen sits high on that list.
The Galatasaray striker, already back in rhythm with a decisive brace in last weekend’s Super Lig restart, is firmly on Arsenal’s radar. But the numbers are brutal. According to Foot Mercato, Osimhen earns over €20 million net per year in Turkey – a salary “no European club can currently afford”.
Arsenal’s stance is blunt: they will not smash their wage structure, even for a striker of his pedigree. If Osimhen wants the move, he will have to bend first.
The Alvarez avenue closes
For a moment, it looked like another route might open.
On Friday, reports surfaced that Atletico Madrid had agreed a deal to send Julian Alvarez to north London. The Argentina international, who previously played for Manchester City, was suddenly being linked with a Premier League return.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano then laid out the reality. Posting on X, he revealed that Arsenal held direct talks with Atletico in London, meeting with director Mateu Alemany to discuss the conditions of a potential deal. The price was steep. The player’s stance was decisive.
Alvarez has “never opened doors to England so far,” Romano reported, with the forward instead focused on a move to Barcelona. Arsenal tried. Alvarez wasn’t interested.
So the search for a striker circles back to Osimhen.
Arteta calm in public, questions in the background
After the comfortable win over Coventry, Mikel Arteta cut a relaxed figure when asked about further attacking reinforcements.
“I’m really happy with the squad that we have,” he said. “The main focus is to improve the players we already have, as we already have a lot of good things.”
On the surface, that’s a manager content with his options. But the market tells a different story. Arsenal are probing, talking, pushing – just not at any cost.
With the transfer window closing on September 1, the situation is brutally simple for Osimhen. Stay at Galatasaray on enormous wages, with Champions League football and the comfort of a starring role in Turkey. Or cut his salary demands, step into the Premier League for the first time, and join the reigning English champions fresh from a run to the Champions League final.
The ball, as Foot Mercato put it, is firmly in his court.
Title race stakes: Osimhen as the difference-maker?
Outside the club, the debate is already raging over how much Arsenal need a striker of Osimhen’s calibre to keep their crown.
Before the season kicked off, Chelsea legend Joe Cole didn’t hesitate when asked what could tilt the title race.
Speaking on the Dressing Room podcast, he said: “I’ve been flipping and I’m going to put an asterisk on this. I think Man City win the title if Arsenal don’t bring in a No. 9 because I still think that will be a problem for them.
“So I’m going to go Man City to win the league ahead of Arsenal but if they bring in Victor Osimhen, I would flip it back. But as it stands I’m going for Man City.”
Former Premier League striker Carlton Cole pushed the point even harder.
“Arsenal have the best squad and if they get Victor Osimhen in they’re going to be flying,” he said. “He could be top goalscorer if he comes.”
That is the scale of the decision facing the Nigerian forward. Stay where the money is highest, or jump into a title race where he could become the missing piece of an already formidable champion.
Arsenal have drawn their line. They will not pay over the odds. Now the question is whether Osimhen is willing to cross it.
