The Premier League champions are deep into pre-season, the title defence looming, and Arteta still wants a forward to sharpen an already ruthless attack. Vinicius was the marquee idea, a fantasy briefly fuelled by stalled contract talks in Madrid. That window has slammed shut.

So Arsenal are looking elsewhere – and the next name on the list is anything but low-key.

Esposito in the crosshairs

Inter Milan’s Pio Esposito has emerged as a serious option, a £73 million problem for anyone trying to prise him away from San Siro. According to reports, Arsenal sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in a pre-season derby against AC Milan, a fixture that tends to reveal who can handle pressure and who shrinks under it.

Esposito didn’t shrink. At 6ft 3in, he offers a very different profile to what Arsenal already have. Arteta’s striking department currently leans on Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz, players who bring mobility, link play, and versatility. Esposito adds presence. Penalty-box gravity. A focal point.

The admiration has grown over recent months, and Arsenal’s interest has reached the stage where serious scouting has turned into genuine planning. They are not alone.

Manchester United are watching too. The same reports suggest United are keen on Esposito but are prepared to move slower, less desperate to force an immediate deal. Arsenal, by contrast, know that a fresh attacking option could be the difference between retaining the title and chasing it.

Inter, publicly at least, are trying to shut this down. The word from the club is that Esposito is “untouchable”, a statement designed as much for the player’s ears as for those of circling clubs. Behind the scenes, though, there is a number. The Serie A side are understood to have set a private valuation at around £73 million, a figure high enough to deter the half-interested but tempting enough to test the resolve of Europe’s elite.

Those close to Esposito insist he is committed to Inter. That matters. But another detail matters just as much: the Premier League calls to him. The idea of England, the speed, the spotlight, the scale of the league – it is said to be on his mind, and he is open to a move.

If Arsenal decide to go all in, they will not be bidding alone. But they might be the ones most willing to push first.

Villa brace for Konsa departure

While the forward search dominates headlines, Arsenal’s defensive planning is running on a parallel track. At the heart of it sits Ezri Konsa, and at Aston Villa there is a growing sense of inevitability.

Villa are described as “resigned to losing” the centre-back, with Arsenal ready to raise their offer for the 28-year-old. Arteta’s interest dates back to the moment William Saliba went down with a back injury at the World Cup, an absence that exposed how fragile Arsenal’s defensive depth could become.

That concern hasn’t gone away. Ben White and Jurrien Timber have both had injury issues to manage, and the club cannot afford another season where one setback at the back derails the entire campaign. Konsa, experienced, composed, and Premier League-proven, fits the profile.

Arsenal’s opening bid, though, fell well short. Villa value him at around £60 million, and the first offer from north London was reported to be just over half that. It was never going to be enough.

Now the tone has shifted. The Mail reports that Villa are “increasingly concerned” that Konsa will leave before the window closes. Inside the dressing room, the mood is no calmer. Team-mates are said to fear he is planning his exit, especially after Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans have already walked out the door this summer.

And Arsenal are not the only ones watching.

Liverpool lurking in the background

Liverpool have their own defensive problems to solve. Virgil van Dijk is back in the squad after the World Cup, but the picture around him is far from settled. Joe Gomez has picked up a pre-season injury, while Jeremy Jacquet has been missing from other friendlies, leaving Andoni Iraola short of reliable options at the back.

That kind of vulnerability invites opportunity. If Konsa edges closer to the exit, Liverpool could move, turning a two-club tug-of-war into something far more complicated for Villa.

For Arsenal, the equation is brutally simple. They are champions now. Champions get targeted, stretched, tested across four competitions. Arteta needs a deeper squad, not just a better XI. A powerful young striker in Esposito. A seasoned defender in Konsa.

The names are clear. The prices are high. The clock is ticking.
