Arsenal's Pursuit of Brighton's Jack Hinshelwood
Arsenal have already punched hard in this summer’s market. They don’t look finished yet.
Fresh from ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title, Mikel Arteta’s side are now reported to be at the front of the queue for Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood, with Arsenal said to be “leading” Manchester United and Manchester City in the chase for the 21-year-old.
Arsenal push for Hinshelwood
According to The Sun, Arsenal have moved the versatile Brighton talent towards the top of their wishlist and view him as a “top priority” target. Arteta is described as believing Hinshelwood would be the “perfect addition” to his evolving squad.
Hinshelwood is primarily a defensive midfielder but has shown he can operate higher up the pitch. That flexibility has not gone unnoticed. Last season he produced four goals and four assists in the Premier League, an impressive return for a young player still learning the division and being shuffled through different roles.
Brighton, as ever, hold the cards. The report states that the Seagulls would prefer to keep their academy graduate, who has three years remaining on his current deal, leaving the south-coast club in a strong position at the negotiating table. Even so, it is believed that an offer in the region of £43m to £51m could tempt them into an agreement.
Hinshelwood is also the son of former Brighton player Adam Hinshelwood, a neat family thread that underlines just how much the club have invested in his development. Letting him go would not be taken lightly.
Arsenal, though, have shown they are ready to pay for the right profile. They have already brought in Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier this summer as they look to build a deeper, more adaptable squad capable of defending their title and pushing deeper in Europe.
The plan is not complete. Arsenal still want a centre-back and at least one more attacking option, either a winger or a striker. Hinshelwood, with his ability to cover multiple midfield roles, would add another layer of tactical flexibility to Arteta’s options.
Centre-back hunt rumbles on
At the back, Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa remains the headline name. A report on Friday claimed a move for the England international was “99% done”, suggesting Arsenal were on the brink of sealing a major defensive signing.
That claim has been sharply cooled.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel on Saturday morning, made it clear that while Konsa is “very appreciated” at Arsenal and “remains on Arsenal’s shortlist”, the deal is not at the near-complete stage some have suggested. Interest is concrete; agreement is not.
Arsenal have explored other centre-back options, but some doors have already been slammed shut. Romano has ruled out moves for Atletico Madrid’s Marc Pubill and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah after both clubs made their stance clear.
On Pubill, Romano reported: “The player is not for sale. Atletico Madrid have no intention to sell.”
On Quansah, he explained: “Arsenal made official contact with Bayer Leverkusen… The answer from Leverkusen is that they don’t want to sell the player. So they rejected the approach.”
So the picture is clear. Arsenal are pushing on multiple fronts: a new centre-back, attacking reinforcements, and now a serious move for one of Brighton’s brightest academy products. They have their title. The question now is how aggressively they build a squad to keep it.
