Arsenal Set to Sign United Winger James Scanlon

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of highly rated Manchester United winger James Scanlon as their aggressive academy rebuild continues to take shape.

The 19-year-old, on United’s books since 2021, is set to join the Gunners on a free transfer, with a hefty 40 per cent sell-on clause agreed as part of the deal. He has already completed his medical, and the two clubs are expected to rubber-stamp the move within the next 48 hours.

This is not a signing for the loan carousel. Arsenal have no immediate plans to send Scanlon out on temporary spells. He will start with the Under-21s, but the message around the move is clear: he is arriving with the intention of forcing his way into Mikel Arteta’s first-team thinking as quickly as he can.

Scanlon’s profile is unusual for a teenager arriving into a Premier League academy. He already has 24 senior caps for Gibraltar, experience that has sharpened his game and drawn attention from across Europe, particularly in Spain. Sevilla pushed to sign him permanently in January, but United chose a different route, sending him to Swindon Town on loan for the second half of last season.

Arsenal’s interest has been driven from inside the building as much as from the scouting network. New Under-21 head coach David Horseman worked briefly with Scanlon during his time at United and strongly recommended him to the club’s hierarchy. The reports have been backed up by Chris Perkins, who knew the winger well from his days overseeing academy recruitment at Derby County, where Scanlon came through the age groups before heading to Old Trafford.

Scanlon will become the second young player to swap United for Arsenal this summer, following defender Habeeb Ogunneye. Like Scanlon, Ogunneye has arrived on a free transfer with a significant sell-on clause attached, underlining how both clubs view the long-term value of their prospects.

This is all part of a deliberate shift in strategy in north London. Arsenal have placed renewed emphasis on strengthening their Under-21 squad, aiming to raise the standard of the group and create a more direct pipeline into Arteta’s senior side.

That intent was underlined again this week when 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed he will leave Blackburn Rovers after Arsenal finally secured his signature.

The pattern is unmistakable: Arsenal are stockpiling young talent with real senior pedigree. The question now is which of them will be the first to break through and stay.
