Arsenal Sign Ezri Konsa as First Defensive Addition of the Summer
Arsenal have moved to reinforce the heart of their back line, sealing a deal for England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa on a long-term contract.
The 28-year-old becomes the club’s first defensive arrival of the window, stepping into north London after seven seasons of steady, high-level Premier League work at Villa Park. In that time he passed the 200-appearance mark in all competitions and quietly built a reputation as one of the division’s most reliable operators.
From Charlton prospect to Premier League mainstay
Konsa’s journey has rarely been flashy, but it has been relentless.
He emerged at Charlton Athletic, breaking into the first team in 2016 and quickly standing out as one of the brightest young defenders in the lower leagues. Two full seasons of senior football there were enough to convince Brentford to move in 2018, a step up that proved decisive.
A strong 2018–19 campaign in the Championship pushed his stock higher. Aston Villa, preparing for life back in the top flight, pounced in 2019. That move turned Konsa from promising prospect into established Premier League defender.
At Villa, consistency became his calling card. Week after week, he anchored the defence, switching seamlessly between centre-back and right-back. That versatility, combined with his composure on the ball and reading of the game, underpinned Villa’s rise and cemented his status as one of the league’s leading defenders.
England international pedigree
Konsa’s club form eventually forced the international door open.
He progressed through England’s youth ranks, representing the Under-20 and Under-21 sides, before finally earning his senior debut in 2023. Since then he has become a regular presence for the Three Lions, featuring at Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup and proving he can handle the demands of tournament football as well as the weekly grind of the league.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta was clear about why the club moved for him.
