Arsenal have finally landed the defender Mikel Arteta has been pushing for – and it’s cost them more than £50m to get him.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Ezri Konsa is on his way from Aston Villa to north London, with a fee agreed in the region of £50m plus add-ons and a long-term contract in place. The England international will undergo his medical within the next 48 hours before putting pen to paper at Arsenal, with the Athletic reporting the total package is £51m plus bonuses and that the tests are scheduled for Thursday.
Arsenal move for versatility and experience
This is not a speculative signing. Arsenal are in win-now mode and Konsa fits that brief. At 28, he has been Aston Villa’s standout defender for several seasons, a cornerstone of Unai Emery’s back line and a key part of their rise into the Champions League places. He then carried that form onto the biggest stage, impressing with England at the World Cup.
Arteta wanted exactly this profile: someone who can step straight into a title-chasing side and handle pressure. With William Saliba sidelined by a back problem and Jurrien Timber out with a groin injury, the need for a defender capable of operating at both centre-back and right-back had become urgent. Konsa ticks both boxes. He brings Premier League know-how, tactical flexibility and the calmness on the ball Arteta demands.
The move also continues a busy, aggressive summer at the Emirates. Illan Meslier has arrived to back up in goal, Piero Hincapie’s loan has been turned permanent to bolster the back line, Bruno Guimaraes has been brought in to add steel and class in midfield, and Christos Tzolis has come in on the left wing as Leandro Trossard’s replacement. Konsa was the top target – but not the first call
Romano has described Konsa as Arsenal’s “top target all summer”, yet the path to this deal was not entirely straightforward. On his YouTube channel, he revealed that the club initially tested the water elsewhere.
Over recent weeks, Arsenal tried to prise Marc Pubill from Atletico Madrid. Arteta and the recruitment team viewed the Atleti defender as another solution for their back-line issues, but they hit a brick wall. Atletico simply refused to negotiate. No talks, no compromise, no opening. Pubill stays in Madrid.
With that avenue firmly closed, Arsenal turned fully to Konsa – and got their man.
Knock-on effects in attack
The defensive signing lands amid wider squad manoeuvring. Another high-profile left winger remains on the agenda, and if that deal materialises, Gabriel Martinelli is expected to be given the green light to move on. A more clinical striker is also being targeted as Arsenal look to close the final gap to Manchester City and the rest of Europe’s elite.
For now, though, the statement is clear. Arsenal have paid big money for a defender at his peak, one proven in the Premier League and tested on the international stage.
