Arsenal's Rotation Dilemma Ahead of Napoli Clash
Mikel Arteta walks into Naples with a familiar dilemma. Arsenal open another Champions League campaign on Wednesday night at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, and the choice in front of him is stark: lean on the same core that carried them so far last season, or twist early and rotate.
Last year still lingers. Arsenal swept through the league phase with eight wins from eight, never beaten in 90 minutes, only to fall on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in the final in Budapest. It set a brutal benchmark. Respectable runs and near-misses no longer count for much.
This trip to Napoli is exactly the kind of night that exposes any miscalculation.
Midfield puzzle: Rice anchored, Zubimendi ready
Arteta at least has options in the middle of the pitch, and this is where he can change things without tearing up the structure.
Bruno Guimaraes sat out the win over Chelsea after carrying a knock, and the expectation is that he won’t be rushed. Martin Zubimendi looks the natural replacement, sliding in alongside Declan Rice, who should keep his place as the shield in front of the defence.
Ahead of them, Martin Odegaard remains the conductor. His role as organiser and pressing trigger is too central to tinker with in a hostile away opener, and Arteta is unlikely to disturb that axis unless forced.
Out wide on the left, Eberechi Eze is pushing hard for a start. He offers something different: more risk on the ball, more one‑v‑one threat. In a game where Arsenal may spend long spells without it, that ability to break lines on his own has real value.
Through the middle, the decision is more delicate. Kai Havertz has carried a heavy load already this season, and this is where Arteta may choose to manage minutes. Viktor Gyokeres is waiting for his first start of the campaign and could be handed it in Naples. That would be a controlled adjustment rather than a statement drop; Arsenal need freshness, not drama, across this opening stretch of fixtures.
Defensive injuries tighten the margins
At the back, the picture is far less flexible.
William Saliba is out with a back injury, Jurrien Timber has yet to play a minute this season, and Cristhian Mosquera remains a doubt with a muscle problem. Those absences close off several avenues of rotation and all but lock in Ezri Konsa next to Gabriel after the pair started in the victory over Chelsea.
The only real question sits at left-back. Riccardo Calafiori has started the season impressively, but his injury history will be in every conversation Arteta has with his medical staff. With a long campaign ahead, Arsenal are unlikely to take unnecessary risks on a player they will need deep into the spring.
That opens the door for Piero Hincapie. He was the only defender on the bench against Chelsea, and in Naples he looks a credible candidate to come straight into the XI at left-back. It would allow Arsenal to protect Calafiori while still fielding a back four with enough aggression and recovery pace to cope with Napoli’s threat.
