Arsenal's Pursuit of Victor Osimhen: A New Centre-Forward Solution
Arsenal are weighing up a move for Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen as the search for a new centre-forward threatens to become the defining storyline of their window.
The London club poured £64million into Viktor Gyokeres last summer, yet the feeling inside the Emirates is clear: they still want a different kind of No 9. The name at the top of their wishlist is Julian Alvarez, who has informed Atletico Madrid he wants out in order to chase the game’s biggest prizes – the Champions League, the Ballon d’Or, the lot.
There is a problem. Alvarez dreams of Barcelona. Atleti, sensing the leverage, are said to want upwards of €200m (£171m) for the Argentine. That combination has pushed Arsenal towards alternative plans.
Osimhen back on the Premier League radar
One of those plans is Osimhen. The Nigerian has long spoken of his ambition to play in the Premier League, and his form in Turkey has only reinforced the belief that he belongs on that stage.
According to TEAMtalk, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been holding internal discussions over a possible move for the 27-year-old. The conversations are real, even if they are still at an early stage. Nothing is close, no bids are on the table, but the idea is very much alive.
Manchester United, once heavily linked and long-time admirers of Osimhen, have stepped away. Their interest has “cooled” under the weight of the overall package required to sign him. That retreat has cleared some space in the market and, suddenly, the path looks a little less crowded for Arsenal or Spurs to make a statement move.
The price will dictate everything. Some recent claims have suggested Osimhen could be prised away for around €65m (£55.5m). Given his status as one of Europe’s most feared No 9s, Galatasaray are expected to push for a figure far closer to £100m. With three years left on his contract, the Turkish champions hold a strong hand in negotiations and know it.
Wages that make clubs wince
The fee is only half the battle. Osimhen’s wage demands sit at the heart of every conversation about his future.
TEAMtalk report that the striker is looking for around £400,000 per week to make the jump to England. Those numbers were a major factor in the collapse of his proposed move to Chelsea in 2024, and they have not become any easier to swallow in the current market.
For Arsenal, that creates a strategic dilemma. They already have Gyokeres leading the line. Committing a huge salary and another big fee to a second centre-forward would be a bold, almost ruthless, move – one that would reshape their wage structure and squad hierarchy in an instant.
Some at the club may argue that sporting director Andrea Berta’s energy is better spent elsewhere, particularly on the left flank, where Mikel Arteta still wants a long-term solution.
Left-wing hunt complicates the call
That left side has become a problem area. Arsenal have already watched Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior slip from their grasp this summer. Bradley Barcola is firmly on the radar, but Liverpool currently sit in pole position for the Frenchman and are pushing hard.
If Barcola heads to Anfield, Arsenal will be forced to accelerate talks with other options. Nico Williams, Kenan Yildiz and Iliman Ndiaye are all under consideration as they look to inject more dynamism and end product from the wing.
So the question inside the Emirates is sharpening: do they break the bank for a second marquee striker in Osimhen, or channel those resources into the wide areas and trust Gyokeres to carry the No 9 role?
Tottenham are watching the same situation unfold from across north London, aware that their own pursuit of a top-class striker could collide directly with Arsenal’s plans.
