Arsenal's Pursuit of Julián Álvarez Intensifies Despite Barcelona Dreams
Arsenal refuse to give up on Julián Álvarez – even as the player dreams of Barcelona and Atlético Madrid try to push him towards north London.
The Premier League champions have tracked the Argentine all summer. The message from Álvarez’s camp has been consistent: his ideal move is to La Liga, with Barcelona at the top of his list, not a return to England. Yet the story keeps twisting back towards the Emirates.
“All signs point to England”
In Spain, the tone has shifted. Sport report that Álvarez’s future “will be decided in the coming hours, and all signs point to England,” with Atlético said to be “pushing” the striker towards Arsenal over a domestic rival.
The 26-year-old has been clear that a move is coming. Earlier this summer he stated that “the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” after Real Madrid reportedly saw a £129 million bid knocked back by Atlético.
Since then, Mikel Arteta has stepped in personally. The Arsenal manager has phoned Álvarez, making his pitch directly. For now, though, the former Manchester City forward is understood to still be fixated on Barcelona as his preferred destination.
Atlético in London, Arsenal in the mix
The plot thickens in London. Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in the capital to negotiate with Chelsea over striker Nicolas Jackson. That trip could open another door: Sport Witness report that Álvarez’s name may also be on the table in talks, with Arsenal an obvious option to be explored while Alemany is in the city.
Arsenal’s role in the wider striker market is growing. Viktor Gyökeres has been linked with Barcelona, while Gabriel Jesus is also said to be on the Catalan club’s shortlist. That web of interest means the Gunners could end up shaping several moves – or none at all.

Big offers, bigger decisions
Arsenal’s proposal for Álvarez is significant. According to Sport, relayed by Sport Witness, the offer on the table is “€80m plus Viktor Gyökeres,” with the Argentine able to “double his salary at the Emirates and have a key role under Mikel Arteta.”
It is the kind of package that changes careers. And dressing rooms.
Álvarez would arrive as more than just another attacker. He could step straight into Gabriel Martinelli’s role on the left, or operate as a central option alongside or instead of Kai Havertz, depending on who leaves London Colney in the coming weeks.
That question matters because the dominoes are already wobbling. Martinelli has reportedly turned down an offer from Galatasaray. Victor Osimhen is also said to be on Arsenal’s radar, another heavyweight name in an already crowded rumour mill.
By contrast, some pursuits have already hit a dead end. Arsenal are not involved in the chase for Bradley Barcola. Moves for Vinícius Jr and Morgan Rogers have collapsed: Vinícius chose to extend his stay in Madrid, while Rogers opted for Chelsea in a British record transfer.
So the market tightens. The options narrow. The stakes rise.
