Arsenal's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez: Barcelona Blocked
Arsenal’s late-window move for Julian Alvarez is no longer a fantasy on the fringes of the market. It’s a live possibility – and one that, according to Fabrizio Romano, “should not be underestimated”.
The Argentina international has spent the summer forcing the issue. He has pushed hard for a move to Barcelona, souring his relationship with Atletico Madrid and a sizeable portion of their support in the process. His message was clear: Barcelona or nothing.
Atletico draw a hard line with Barcelona
On Thursday, CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin went public with a ferocious statement that effectively shut the Camp Nou door in Alvarez’s face for as long as he runs the club.
“The truth is that it outrages us even more; we are repulsed by the dishonesty, the lack of ethics, transparency and professionalism,” Gil Marin said, aiming his anger squarely at Barcelona’s conduct.
“We can only insist that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances.
“I have the support of everyone working with me, from shareholders to directors, and the only certain and firm decision is that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances. You have my word – the player [Alvarez] will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona.”
That is not just a stance for this week or this window. Gil Marin stressed that “as long as I will be here as Atletico Madrid CEO, forget about Julian Alvarez to Barcelona.” The message is long-term, and it is brutal: not now, not later.
Yet when he spoke about other clubs, the tone shifted. If Alvarez does not want to stay in Madrid, he said, there will be no deal with Barcelona, but Atletico are “open to finding a solution”.
In other words: choose anyone but Barca, and we’ll talk.
Arsenal wait in the shadows
This is where Arsenal step in.
Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, underlined that the Gunners are not just lurking passively.
“I know I’ve been on this one for a few days and many of you don’t believe it but I keep telling you that Arsenal are there for Julian Alvarez. Arsenal are there. Arsenal are waiting. Arsenal have their own strategy, I think it’s a real strategy,” he said.
“It’s not that Arsenal are just there looking at the situation. Arsenal are in the background because obviously Arsenal need to respect the player, his family, his agents, the player decides. So Arsenal can only wait but at the same time, while they are waiting and while they are in the background, Arsenal are active in the conversations.”
According to Romano, Arsenal have already told Atletico they are ready to do business and try to reach an agreement if Alvarez gives the green light. The finances are lined up too.
With Gabriel Martinelli set to be sold, the north London club expect to bring in between £50m and £60m. Combined with other recent income, that gives them room to move for Alvarez.
“This extra money after all the extra money generated by Arsenal in the recent months gives Arsenal space to make business for Julian Alvarez,” Romano explained. “So Arsenal will be ready to sit at the table with Atletico Madrid and to reach an agreement.”
The clock, though, is ticking. Four or five days left in the window. Not much more.
Barcelona dream vs Arsenal reality
Up to “today, tonight, the recent hours”, as Romano put it, Alvarez has held one line: only Barcelona.
“Until today, until tonight, until the recent hours, Julian always said only Barcelona, ‘I want Barcelona, my dream is Barcelona’ but Arsenal keep waiting and remain on their position,” Romano said.
The dynamic is now brutally simple. Barcelona is the dream. Atletico have slammed that door. Arsenal are the escape route.
Romano framed it in stark, human terms.
“It’s real people in real life. So if at any moment Julian Alvarez or his agent call Arsenal to tell them ‘okay we want to come because there is no other way’ Arsenal will be ready. So get ready for this scenario because it’s not impossible. Arsenal are there for Julian and we have to follow the situation but this depends on the player.”
Atletico, for their part, would prefer to keep him. They “would love to continue with Julian to have a new chance to continue together”, Romano stressed. But they also know the landscape: if Alvarez asks to go, Arsenal are positioned to move immediately.
“Guys, the message from Atletico Madrid is very clear: if Julian wants to go to Arsenal please go. You are free to go,” Romano summed up. “So, it’s on Julian to decide what he wants to do.
“Let’s see because this Arsenal scenario should not be underestimated.”
The market is closing in, Barcelona are blocked, Arsenal are waiting by the phone. Now it’s down to one man to decide how far he’s willing to bend his dream.
