Arsenal Pursues Julian Alvarez: Viktor Gyokeres on the Line
Arsenal are pushing hard to land Julian Alvarez – and are ready to sacrifice Viktor Gyokeres to do it.
With the summer window ticking down, Mikel Arteta is still hunting the elite No.9 he believes can turn his title winners into Champions League conquerors. Alvarez remains the priority, even as links to Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen refuse to disappear in the background.
Gyokeres, signed only last summer from Sporting in a £55 million deal and a 21-goal striker in all competitions last season, would normally be untouchable. Not this time. Arsenal’s hierarchy clearly feel that to jump another level, good isn’t enough. They want world class.
Arsenal test Atletico’s resolve
Alvarez has made no secret of his preferred next step. Barcelona is the move he wants. The problem? Atletico Madrid do not want to strengthen a direct LaLiga rival, and Barcelona’s financial issues make a £100m-plus transfer a serious stretch.
That stand-off has given Arsenal their opening.
Talks over a possible deal have already taken place in London, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. Now, Spanish outlet Diario Sport report that Arsenal have gone a step further, putting a swap proposal on the table that would send Gyokeres to Atletico and bring Alvarez to the Emirates.
The structure is bold. The report claims Arsenal are prepared to offer around £68.5m plus Gyokeres for the former Manchester City forward. For a player only one season into his Arsenal career, it’s a ruthless move that underlines how determined the club are to reshape their attack around Alvarez.
Crucially, the same report suggests Alvarez’s stance may be shifting. With Atletico unwilling to deal with Barcelona, the “player’s head” is said to have turned towards Arsenal and the Emirates Stadium project.
Financially, there is little in the way. Wages would not be an obstacle for either club, and Alvarez is expected to double his salary if the deal goes through.
The missing piece?
On the pitch, the timing of this push is no coincidence. Arsenal opened their Premier League campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Coventry on Friday night, a performance that only sharpened the sense that they are one elite striker away from something special.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville captured that feeling as he weighed up what Alvarez could add to Arteta’s side.
“We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona, but if Arsenal could get Alvarez somehow that is going to light this place up, because then you have a world class striker to go with all the other world class defenders and midfield players,” Neville said.
“They’d become not just Premier League title winners, but you’re then thinking that they can go that extra step and win the Champions League as well.
“He does need that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well they’ll go and win a big game for you.
“Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure.”
That last line lingers. Even amid the praise, there is a challenge: is Alvarez truly the ruthless, game-breaking No.9 Arsenal crave, or simply a very good forward in a great team?
Arteta and Arsenal seem convinced the upside is worth the gamble. Letting Gyokeres go after one season, and at a loss on pure cash terms, would be a clear statement that they see Alvarez as the long-term spearhead of a side built to dominate England and crack Europe.
For now, it rests on Atletico. Accept Gyokeres plus cash and reshape their own attack, or hold firm and risk losing a player who appears increasingly open to North London.
Arsenal return to Premier League action on August 31 away at Aston Villa, where Ezri Konsa is set to face his former club. By then, the question is simple: will Arteta walk out at Villa Park with the same striker options he has now, or with Julian Alvarez leading the line for the champions?
