Arsenal Aims for Premier League Glory After Community Shield Win
Arsenal barely waited for the Premier League curtain to rise before sending a message. A 3-0 dismantling of Manchester City in Cardiff. The Community Shield in their hands. And a manager who sounds like he wants much more than a glorified season-opener.
The champions are back, and Mikel Arteta is already talking about doing “something special” again.
Arteta’s hunger, Arsenal’s challenge
Arsenal had to wait 22 years to get their hands back on the Premier League trophy. Two decades of frustration, false dawns and rebuilds. Now, on the eve of their title defence, the mood around the Emirates is very different.
Coventry City, last season’s Championship winners, arrive in north London on Friday night for the big kick-off. Arteta made it clear his side are not treating this like a gentle reintroduction.
Asked if Arsenal have the drive to retain the league, the Spaniard didn’t hesitate.
“You want to go through it again, the desire comes; I want to live that moment again, and I want to live other moments even bigger than them, and we know what it’s going to take,” he said.
“We know the difficulty of the task, that’s why we’ve never done it in this football club – so we know that it’s going to demand something special and we are ready for it.”
That line cuts straight to Arsenal’s historical sore spot. They have never retained the Premier League. You have to go back to the 1930s for the last time they successfully defended the English top-flight title. For a club of their size, that’s a glaring gap in the honours list.
Arteta is determined this group uses that as fuel, not baggage.
Statement in Cardiff
If Sunday was a gauge of appetite, Arsenal passed it with something close to swagger.
They didn’t just beat Manchester City at the Principality Stadium. They outplayed them, 3-0, to lift the Community Shield and walk away with another piece of silverware, however modest compared to the prize they really want.
Afterwards, Arteta’s message to his players was simple: once you’ve tasted it, you don’t stop.
“When you win something big like this, you fight so much for it, and you go through that emotion, you win it, and you want it again. That’s what we want,” he said.
“We need to push everybody every single day. We’re going to make each other better, and we have an incredible squad, so let’s go for it.
“We know what the Premier League brings and it’s a huge challenge every week, and Coventry is going to be a big one on Friday. So now we have to recover after a massive shift [on Sunday], but I really liked, again, the desire and the will that the team showed.”
The message was not subtle: standards cannot dip, even for a moment. Not with a target on their backs and a title to defend.
Konsa deal and a defensive reshuffle
Behind the scenes, Arsenal are moving just as aggressively.
On Wednesday, the club agreed a £50 million deal to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, a move designed to reinforce a defence already hit by injury. William Saliba is out for an extended spell with a back problem. Jurrien Timber is also sidelined long-term with a groin issue. Arteta needed another defender. He has gone out and found one.
The England international is expected to undergo a medical within the next 48 hours. The timing is tight. If the deal is not completed in time for Konsa to feature against Coventry, the plan is straightforward: his debut would likely come in Arsenal’s second league match.
That game? Away at Aston Villa.
For Konsa, it would be a swift and emotionally charged return to his former club. For Arsenal, it could be the night a key new signing steps into a title defence already carrying serious expectations.
The champions say they are ready to do something special. Now they have to live it, every single week.
