Arsenal step out of the shadows today. After a low-key, behind-closed-doors win over MK Dons on Saturday, Mikel Arteta’s side finally play in front of their own supporters for the first time this summer, facing Girona in their opening official pre-season fixture.
This is where the real scrutiny begins.
A debut on the cards
Arteta is expected to hand out at least one debut, with the coaching staff ready to shuffle a squad that is still missing several World Cup regulars and key leaders.
The group remains stretched. Every Arsenal player who went deep into the World Cup with Spain or England is still on holiday, recovering from a long season and a demanding tournament. Martin Odegaard, who carried Norway to the quarter-finals, has also yet to report back for pre-season. They will all have ground to make up when they return.
One player is already ahead of the curve. Kai Havertz, working individually at Bayer Leverkusen’s facilities last week, has kept his fitness ticking over and could walk straight into the side against Girona. Arteta has not been shy about fast-tracking trusted players in pre-season, and Havertz’s sharpness may tempt him again.
Injuries shape the early picture
At the back, the picture is more complicated. William Saliba is facing what the club describe as an “extended period” out with a back injury, a serious concern given his influence at the heart of the defence. His absence opens a door and raises a question: who steps in and convinces Arteta they can be trusted when the real stuff starts?
Cristhian Mosquera is the leading candidate tonight. The young centre-back is set for another chance to show he can anchor the defence in Saliba’s absence. These are the minutes that matter for players on the fringes; one composed display can change a manager’s depth chart.
Ben White’s situation offers a rare positive twist. The right-back has not played since a knee injury cut short his season, and he sat out the MK Dons run-out. He has, though, been training consistently over the last couple of weeks and is now closing in on a full return. Girona could mark his first steps back into competitive rhythm, even if his involvement is carefully managed.
Not everyone is that close. Jurrien Timber, who underwent minor groin surgery in the summer, still needs more time before he is ready to rejoin the action. Arsenal will not rush him, particularly given last season’s injury frustrations across the back line.
Big names eased in, youngsters ready to pounce
Up front, there will be familiar faces in unfamiliar roles. Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli are expected to link up with the squad ahead of the match, but their impact tonight is likely to be limited. After only brief training sessions, they are more likely to feature in short bursts than as central figures.
That creates space for the academy. Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri both head into this game with a clear opportunity: impress now, and force their way into Arteta’s thinking for the rest of the summer. Nwaneri, already on the radar after his early breakthrough, will know that pre-season is where reputations harden and pecking orders shift.
The same applies across the pitch. With senior internationals still away and others nursing knocks, Arteta’s selection against Girona will be shaped as much by availability as by long-term planning. That does not make it any less revealing.
Pre-season rarely decides a campaign, but it often decides who gets trusted when the season starts. For Havertz, Mosquera, Nwaneri and the rest, tonight is not just a friendly. It is a first audition in front of their own crowd.
