Liverpool have spent years raiding other British academies for the best young talent. Now one of their fiercest rivals is about to return the favour.

This time, though, the spotlight falls on a player heading the other way.
Arsenal strike agreement for Joseph
Arsenal have reached an agreement with Liverpool academy striker Vincent Joseph over a move to north London, with the clubs now locked in talks over a compensation fee for the 16-year-old.
Joseph did not sign scholarship terms with Liverpool this summer after his schoolboy registration expired, opening the door for the Gunners to step in. With no professional contract in place, the fee will either be settled between the two clubs or, if they cannot agree, set by a tribunal.
That mechanism kicks in when a player under 24 leaves before signing their first professional deal, or at the end of existing professional terms. It is a familiar route in academy battles at the top of the English game, and Liverpool now find themselves on the wrong side of it.
A prolific record at youth level
The frustration at Kirkby will be real. Joseph’s numbers hint at a forward with serious upside.
He scored three goals in just two appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season, a sharp return in limited minutes that underlined his instinct in the box. On the international stage, he has eight goals in nine caps for England Under-16s, including a hat-trick against the Netherlands last December, as recorded by Transfermarkt.
Those are the kind of figures that make academy staff sit up. They are also the kind that tempt a club like Arsenal to move quickly, even if it risks a tribunal.
Roles reversed in academy tug-of-war
Liverpool know this playbook well. They used it themselves when they swooped for Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea shortly after his 16th birthday, with that deal also heading towards a tribunal to determine the eventual fee.
They have acted decisively with other prospects too, tying down talents such as Lucas Clarke to professional contracts. With Joseph, though, they could not get it over the line. Arsenal sensed the gap and stepped through it.
For Liverpool, it stings. Losing a precocious striker to a direct domestic rival is never easy to swallow, especially one whose development they have helped shape. For Arsenal, it feels like a statement that their own academy pull remains strong, even against clubs who have made youth recruitment a central pillar.
