Arsenal Dominates Manchester City 3-0 in Community Shield

Arsenal have picked up exactly where they left off.

Mikel Arteta’s side brushed Manchester City aside 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, delivering an early-season statement and collecting the club’s 18th title in the competition.

Riccardo Calafiori needed less than a minute to announce himself. Myles Lewis-Skelly drove into space and whipped a low ball across the box; Calafiori arrived with perfect timing to sweep it home and stun Enzo Maresca in his first competitive game in charge of City.

Arsenal never really let them breathe after that.

Kai Havertz, increasingly central to Arteta’s attacking plans, doubled the lead before the interval, capitalising on Arsenal’s control and City’s uncertainty. Any hope of a response after the break vanished almost immediately.

Three minutes into the second half, Martin Odegaard twisted the knife. Named player of the match, the captain glided past Josko Gvardiol and then Gianluigi Donnarumma before adding a composed third, the kind of goal that underlines just how much authority he now carries in this team.

For Maresca, it was a bruising introduction. For Arsenal, it felt like a continuation of last season’s relentless surge.

Attention now swings quickly to the Premier League opener at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, when newly promoted Coventry City arrive in north London. The rhythm of competitive games is back, and Arsenal look ready for it.

But while the first team set the tone on the pitch, the club’s work off it is just as aggressive.

Behind the scenes, Arsenal’s recruitment drive shows no sign of easing. According to Sky reporter Patrick Berger, the club have registered their interest in Borussia Dortmund’s chief scout, Sebastian Krug, and have already made initial contact over a possible move.

Krug is no fringe figure in Dortmund’s operation. He has spent close to a decade at the Bundesliga club and has been central to some of their most lucrative pieces of business. He played a key role in identifying and recruiting Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, signings that later generated huge transfer income and helped define Dortmund’s recent era.

Sky Germany reports that talks between Arsenal and Krug have already taken place in London. They are not alone in their pursuit: Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also understood to have expressed interest in the highly regarded scout.

Krug has held the title of chief scout at Dortmund since 2022 and, since November 2024, has shared the role with Laurent Busser. His current deal runs until 2028, a contract length that gives Dortmund significant leverage in any negotiations.

If Arsenal decide to push hard and secure an agreement, it would represent another heavyweight addition to a recruitment department that has already underpinned a strong summer of first-team strengthening.

Any move, though, will ultimately hinge on Dortmund’s willingness to talk. With so long left on Krug’s contract, Arsenal know this chase will be nothing like a free run through an open goal.
