Arsenal's Active Transfer Market Ahead of Title Defence
Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal are “really active” in the final stretch of the transfer window, as the champions look to sharpen a squad already rebuilt with heavyweight summer signings.
The Gunners have moved aggressively since lifting the Premier League title, landing Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, while sealing a £51m deal for Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa. The England defender has completed his switch to North London, with only the formal club announcement still to come.
All of it forms the backdrop to tonight’s Premier League curtain-raiser at the Emirates, where Arsenal begin their 2026/27 title defence at home to Frank Lampard’s newly promoted Coventry City.
Arteta: “We are really active in the market”
Speaking before the game, Arteta made it clear Arsenal’s business is not finished ahead of the September 1 deadline, with a new forward on the wishlist and several departures anticipated.
“We are really active in the market, I think I mentioned that a few days ago. The ambition is to improve the squad,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
The urgency stems from a problem at the heart of his defence. William Saliba’s long-term injury has left a gap that even the arrival of Konsa does not fully close.
“We have a really specific issue in the backline, especially with the long-term injury of Wilo [Saliba] and the fact that we miss one more defender; that's clear. So we are trying to reinforce that area. Whenever we're ready, we'll announce something.”
Arsenal’s stance is unambiguous: they want another defender, and they are prepared to move quickly to get one.
New arrivals lift the champions’ level
If the squad still needs work, Arteta is in no doubt about the impact of the players already through the door. Guimaraes, Tzolis and Meslier have dropped into a title-winning dressing room and raised the temperature.
“Yes, that's what the new signings bring: a new energy, something to prove in front of them as well, and obviously a competition,” Arteta said.
He pointed to the calibre and personality of the trio as key reasons standards have climbed again in pre-season.
“When you talk about players of that quality and leadership, the same with Christos [Tzolis] or with Illan [Meslier], what they've done since day one, I think it lifts the level of everybody.”
A champion squad, a restless manager, and a transfer window still open. Arsenal begin their title defence tonight with points on the line and room still left to reshape a side aiming to stay on top.
