Anthony Gordon's Promising Debut for Barcelona
Anthony Gordon needed only 45 minutes in a Barcelona shirt to stir a reaction in Spain.
The former Newcastle United forward, signed in a headline move earlier this summer, finally made his unofficial debut on Sunday, starting in a 5-2 friendly win over Basel as Hansi Flick’s side cranked through the gears a week out from their La Liga opener at Elche.
A long wait, a sharp entrance
Gordon’s involvement in England’s World Cup campaign had pushed back his first appearance for the Spanish champions, heightening the sense of intrigue around his first outing. At 25, and fresh from a standout season with Newcastle – 17 goals in 46 games, including a stunning 10 in 12 in the Champions League – he arrived in Catalonia with serious expectations attached.
He has been brought in as the man to replace Marcus Rashford at Camp Nou. On Sunday, he finally pulled on the shirt.
Lining up on the wing in a front three with new signing Karim Adeyemi and Raphinha as the spearhead, Gordon got his first taste of Flick’s Barcelona as the Catalans swept Basel aside with goals from Adeyemi, Hamza Abdelkarim, Lamine Yamal and a brace from Jesse Bisiwu.
The scoreline flattered the attack. The scrutiny, though, fell on the new No. 1 attraction.
‘Game-changer’ verdict from Sport
Sport wasted little time in nailing down their first impression. They handed Gordon a seven out of 10 and distilled his impact into two words: “Game-changer”.
He “started very brightly”, they noted, repeatedly praising his explosive change of pace. The Englishman drove at defenders, worked relentlessly without the ball and quickly found an understanding with his new teammates.
The intensity dipped as the half wore on. Sport pointed out that he “lost steam and influence” towards the end of the opening 45 minutes before being withdrawn at half-time, still short of full fitness after a truncated pre-season.
Yet their conclusion was clear: the display only lacked a goal to “complete a brilliant debut”.
Buzz, curiosity and a ‘mixed bag’
If Sport focused on the spark, Mundo Deportivo zoomed out to the spectacle around it. Barcelona’s win over Basel, they wrote, “satisfied fans’ curiosity” as they finally got a first look at Gordon and Adeyemi together, flanking Raphinha.
The mood in the stands matched the hype. There was a “real buzz” to see Gordon from the first whistle, and the publication reported that supporters left “pleased” with what they saw from both of the new attackers.
Gordon’s performance was labelled a “mixed bag”, but the positives dominated. Mundo Deportivo echoed the view that he began “brightly”, repeatedly “changing pace down the wing” and showing plenty of personality on the ball. He made aggressive runs to the byline, swapped positions with Raphinha as a false nine and offered, as they put it, “a taste of what awaits Barca fans”.
Not perfect. But promising, and clearly noticed.
Flick’s blueprint comes into focus
AS framed Gordon’s debut within the broader project. For them, his 45 minutes were another sign that Flick’s Barcelona is “beginning to take shape”.
With several key players short of pre-season minutes, the German coach is still “fine-tuning” his side, but the new faces immediately caught the eye. “The new signings shone,” AS wrote, grouping Gordon with goalscorers Adeyemi and Bisiwu as the fresh energy driving the performance.
Gordon was described as one of two “very sharp” wingers, repeatedly delivering “dangerous crosses” into the box. The front three, led by Raphinha, still lacked “clinical finishing and a cutting edge”, a reminder that this is August, not April.
Yet AS saw enough in the movement and interchanges between the trio to suggest that their understanding “can be a very effective weapon” once the real games start.
A debut that sets the tone
No goals. Only 45 minutes. But Gordon’s first outing for Barcelona did what pre-season debuts are supposed to do: it sparked conversation, raised expectations and hinted at a front line that could look very different – and very dangerous – under Flick.
The fitness will come. The chemistry will grow. The question now is simple: when the champions walk out at Elche next week, does Gordon’s first competitive touch in a Barcelona shirt land with the same jolt he delivered in Basel?
