Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona: Competition Intensifies

Barcelona’s left flank, usually a settled storyline, has suddenly become one of the sharpest subplots of their summer.

With the transfer window ticking down, Alejandro Balde’s future is back under the spotlight. Manchester United are circling, and while the left-back is understood to be happy at Barça, his situation is no longer straightforward.

The 20-year-old reportedly met with his agent this week to assess his role under Hansi Flick. The timing is no coincidence. João Cancelo has returned on a permanent deal, and with that, the competition for minutes on the left side of defence has intensified. If Balde senses his importance shrinking, the option to walk away remains on the table.

Press Conference Comments

Flick was pressed on the issue in Saturday’s press conference. He didn’t duck the question, but he didn’t offer the easy soundbite either.

"It's a difficult question because he's a player of immense quality, and it's important to know if he's confident he can compete in his position. That's what I want to see from all my players. Every day I observe what they do, their level, whether they demonstrate that they're at the level to play. Ultimately, we have to play as a team; only then will we achieve success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent."

He could have simply declared his love for Balde and shut the door on any exit talk. Instead, he drew a line in the sand.

The message was clear: this is not a squad built for passengers. Flick wants players who scrap for their place, not those content to wait quietly on the bench for an opening. If Balde is ready to fight Cancelo and anyone else for that left-back spot, the path is there. If not, the coach will not stand in the way of a move.

At Barça, under Flick, being “OK with just being a backup” is no longer a role. It’s a reason to leave.
