Mendes lands, talks intensify
According to Spanish outlet Marca, Jorge Mendes flew into Barcelona this week to accelerate the process. The influential agent met with the club’s sporting director before sitting down with Balde and Marc Casado to outline scenarios for both players.
Casado’s departure has been expected for some time. Balde’s, until recently, had not felt quite so imminent.
That changed quickly.
Barcelona’s decision to leave the Spain international out of the squad to face Elche sent a blunt message. It was not a simple technical choice. Inside and outside the dressing room, it was read as a clear sign that the club is preparing for life without him.
Manchester United push to the front
Balde currently has three concrete offers. Manchester United are leading the race, with current information indicating the Premier League side are the closest to striking a deal for the 20-year-old.
Two other clubs remain firmly in the hunt, but United have moved with the most conviction so far.
Even so, the final word still belongs to the player. Marca report that Balde has not yet given a definitive answer, while Barcelona have yet to formally open negotiations with the interested clubs. His exit is not signed or sealed, but the trajectory of the talks suggests movement is expected in the coming days rather than weeks.
Cancelo’s shadow and a shrinking role
The chances of Balde staying grow slimmer by the day. His omission against Elche speaks loudly enough, and the expectation that Joao Cancelo will take over as the starting left-back only tightens the squeeze on his role.
If Cancelo is locked in on the left, Barcelona’s logic is simple: a sale of Balde would free up space and resources in a squad that still needs surgery in other areas.
Barça’s next move: replace or reshuffle?
If Balde does go, the club will have to react quickly. One path is straightforward: sign another left-back. The other is more strategic: reinforce at centre-back, a long-standing priority for the sporting department.
An internal fix is also on the table. Should Barcelona decide against entering the market for a new full-back, Gerard Martin could be promoted as a solution at left-back, at least in the short term.
The complication? The transfer window closes in just nine days. Decisions can no longer be delayed or dressed up as “evaluations”.
Barcelona have to choose: cash in on Balde and reshape the defence, or perform a late U-turn and fight to keep a player whose future, right now, is already being drawn in another shirt.
