Alejandro Balde's Uncertain Future at Barcelona

Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is turning into one of the sagas of the summer.

The 20-year-old, once billed as the next long-term solution at left-back, now finds himself on the fringes under Hansi Flick, with serious doubts over whether he will still be at the club when the transfer window closes.

Omitted and unsettled

The first big sign came on the teamsheet. Balde was left out of Barcelona’s squad for their opening game of the season against Elche. No injury excuse, no rotation logic. Just a clear message.

Inside the club, the feeling is that his status has shifted. Outside, the noise is growing.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Balde feels he is being pushed towards the exit. Barcelona, he suggests, are actively trying to sort out his future, rather than treating him as a key part of Flick’s plans.

Balde doesn’t see himself as a disposable piece. He is understood to be happy at Barça and ready to fight for his place. Flick, though, is unconvinced.

Flick’s hierarchy at left-back

The German coach has already redrawn the depth chart. After a pre-season in which Balde struggled to impress and with last season’s inconsistency still fresh in the memory, Flick has turned elsewhere.

Injuries have also stalled Balde’s momentum at crucial points. The result is a new reality: Barcelona now view Joao Cancelo as their first-choice option at left-back.

Behind him, Gerard Romero is being treated as the temporary backup solution, leaving Balde effectively outside the immediate rotation.

For a La Masia product once fast-tracked into the first team, it is a brutal comedown.

Big clubs circling

If Barcelona are cooling on Balde, the rest of Europe is not.

Aston Villa and SL Benfica have already been linked, and now Manchester United have joined the chase. United are actively looking for a new left-back and are closely tracking the situation, with Balde ticking every box in terms of age, profile and upside.

At 20, with top-level experience and clear potential, he represents exactly the kind of long-term project elite clubs want to lock in early.

Barcelona, though, are not prepared to let him walk for a bargain. The Catalan side value Balde at a minimum of €40 million and will hold that line as talks and interest develop.

So the stand-off is clear: a young defender who wants to stay and fight, a coach who has moved on without him, and a market full of clubs ready to give him a fresh start.

Something will have to give before deadline day.
