Alejandro Balde's Barcelona Future in Jeopardy
Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is hanging by a thread after the left-back was left out of the squad for Sunday’s trip to Elche, capping a turbulent 48 hours at the club.
What began as noise has quickly started to look like the end of a chapter at Camp Nou.
Flick’s challenge, Mendes’ meeting
The tension spiked on Thursday, when agent Jorge Mendes sat down with Barcelona’s Sporting Director to discuss Balde’s situation. The meeting came against a backdrop of growing doubts about the defender’s role under new head coach Hansi Flick.
Those doubts went public on Friday.
Asked directly about the 22-year-old at his prematch press conference, Flick did not offer a ringing endorsement.
"It's a difficult question because he has enormous quality and it's important to know if a player is convinced to be able to compete in his position. That's what I want to see from all my players," the German said.
He pushed the point further.
"Every day I see what the players do - the level - and if they show me that they have the level to play. In the end, we have to play as a team, only then will we have success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent."
For a homegrown full-back once tipped as a long-term starter, the message was blunt: prove it, or someone else will play.
Mixed signals over Balde’s intentions
On Saturday afternoon, Jijantes dropped the bombshell: Balde, they reported, had decided to leave his boyhood club.
The reaction among Barcelona supporters was instant. A La Masia product, a former Spain international, apparently ready to walk away just as the season begins.
Hours later, the story twisted again.
Mundo Deportivo reported that Balde had actually taken Flick’s public challenge as motivation. According to their version, the defender was prepared to stay, fight for his place and win back the trust of the coaching staff.
There was, however, a clear caveat: if Barcelona no longer wanted him, he would accept a move.
By the time the squad list for Elche dropped, the picture had sharpened. Balde was out. Not even on the trip. For a player of his status, that omission felt like more than simple rotation.
Right now, he looks closer to the exit door than the starting XI.
Premier League door wide open
If he does go, he will not be short of offers.
Balde, stamped with the “Made in La Masia” label and still young enough to grow back into Luis de la Fuente’s Spain plans, has long attracted admiring glances from the Premier League.
At this moment, Manchester United appear best placed to move. They need defensive reinforcements, and urgently. A 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their league opener on Saturday underlined just how brittle their back line looks.
A dynamic, attack-minded left-back with top-level experience fits a glaring need at Old Trafford. Barcelona, wrestling with sporting decisions and financial realities, suddenly have a valuable asset whose role has become uncertain.
New faces, new hierarchy at left-back
Balde’s exclusion also shines a light on what Flick might be planning on that flank.
With the 22-year-old cut from the Elche trip, Jordi Pesquer is expected to start, as had been floated earlier in the week. It is a bold call, and a clear sign that reputations alone will not protect anyone in this new era.
New permanent signing Joao Cancelo is also in the squad after completing his move from Al-Hilal, though there are doubts over whether he is fit enough to start so soon.
All of it points in the same direction: competition at full-back is real, and Balde is no longer guaranteed anything.
Barcelona must now decide whether this is a temporary shock to the system for a talented academy graduate, or the beginning of a transfer that sends another La Masia product to the Premier League.
