Belgium's Zeno Debast Ruled Out of World Cup Quarterfinal
Belgium’s preparations for a World Cup quarterfinal against Spain have been thrown into turmoil after Zeno Debast was ruled out in a late and bitter club-versus-country stand-off over his fitness.

The Portuguese club has declared the centre-back medically unfit to play, directly overruling the Belgian national team’s own medical staff.
“The club Sporting Lisbon has informed the player that he is not medically fit to play,” the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) said in a terse statement, underlining the depth of the disagreement.

What had been a routine build-up to a high-stakes knockout tie quickly turned sour. As Belgium fine-tuned their plans for Spain, tensions spiked between Sporting and the RBFA over who gets the final say on Debast’s body.
Belgian outlet RTLinfo reported that Debast had been training individually under the supervision of federation staff, with national-team medics satisfied he could contribute. Officials inside the camp have pushed back against Sporting’s stance, arguing it contradicts both their own medical evaluation and the position of FIFA’s insurers.
The result is a stalemate – and Belgium lose.
From Return to Rupture
Debast’s World Cup has already been a stop-start affair. He missed the entire group stage, watching from the sidelines as Belgium dismantled New Zealand 5-1 to book their place in the Round of 16.
He played no part in the dramatic 3-2 win over Senegal either, still working his way back and waiting for clearance.
The breakthrough seemed to come against co-hosts USA. Debast returned to the squad as Belgium swept to an impressive 4-1 victory, a performance that suggested momentum was finally building for the Red Devils at both ends of the pitch.
Now, just when the tournament was opening up for him, the door has slammed shut again.
