Youri Tielemans' Wait for Manchester United Debut
Youri Tielemans will have to wait.
Manchester United’s £35m summer signing from Aston Villa has not been included in the squad to face Atletico Madrid this afternoon, delaying his first appearance in red by at least a few more days.
The Belgian midfielder, who headed north after an impressive spell in the Midlands, only linked up with his new team-mates at Carrington recently, having taken a short break following his World Cup exertions. The club have opted against rushing him straight into action, even as pre-season starts to sharpen into something more serious.
Carrick keeps his core together
While some managers rip up their teams between early friendlies, Michael Carrick is taking a different route. There are no sweeping rotations here. Between the run-outs against Wrexham and Rosenborg, the United head coach has largely stuck with a consistent core, and that approach continues against Atletico.
He has not been shy about loading minutes onto his senior players either. That alone hints at how quickly Tielemans might be thrust into the thick of it once deemed ready: straight into the starting XI, straight into responsibility.
For now, though, he watches on.
Tielemans trained for the first time alongside fellow Belgian Senne Lammens, but neither has travelled for this third friendly of the summer. Their absence likely opens the door for Radek Vitek to keep his place in goal, rewarded for his steady showings so far.
Back four taking shape
Carrick’s defensive line is starting to look settled, and it has the feel of a Premier League opening-day back four rather than a pre-season experiment. Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw are expected to continue together, building understanding and rhythm with every outing.
Ahead of them, Mason Mount drops into a deeper role alongside Andrey Santos at the base of midfield. It’s a pairing built to control the ball and set the tempo, freeing up the more expressive talents further forward.
Shea Lacey keeps hold of the No10 position, a sign of the faith Carrick has in the youngster after his bright displays. Out wide, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu offer the width and running, while Joshua Zirkzee once again leads the line, tasked with turning all that possession into something that hurts Atletico.
Changes around the edges
There has been movement in the background. Tyler Fredricson will not feature again after his midweek sale to Lausanne-Sport, a reminder that pre-season is as much about shaping squads as shaping tactics.
Benjamin Sesko, meanwhile, is still thought to be carrying a shin injury and may not play any part. United will not take risks with a player earmarked for a significant role once the competitive fixtures begin.
What they do have is a hungry bench. Ethan Williams, Jacob Devaney and Harry Amass all made the most of their chances against Rosenborg, each finding the net in eye-catching cameos. They will be desperate for another opportunity to impress against a higher calibre of opposition.
For Tielemans, the wait goes on. The stage is being built, the structure of Carrick’s team growing clearer by the game. When the Belgian finally steps into it, the expectation will be that he doesn’t just fit in – he elevates it.
