Yan Diomande's Transfer Saga: Leipzig Holds Strong Against Offers
Yan Diomande is 19, under contract until 2030 and, on this summer’s evidence, already too expensive for some of Europe’s richest clubs.
Leipzig have drawn a line in the sand. The message from Saxony is blunt: 100 million euros will not be enough.
City and Real test Leipzig’s resolve
According to Sky, Manchester City have moved from admiration to action. The Premier League runners-up have not yet lodged a formal bid, but have told Leipzig verbally they are ready to go to 100 million euros, bonuses included, for Diomande.
Leipzig’s response? Thanks, but no.
From the perspective of last season’s Bundesliga third-placed side, that figure does not even open the real conversation. They know exactly what they have on their hands: a 19-year-old Ivory Coast international who has exploded in his first year in Germany and is tied down for six more seasons.
Real Madrid have joined the chase. As reported by The Athletic, the European champions have already made contact with Leipzig and spoken directly to the club’s decision-makers about Diomande. The report describes Real as “actively working” to bring the teenager to the Bernabeu.
The first concrete move from Spain, though, came from the league’s runners-up. Sky report that a Real offer has already gone in: 90 million euros as a base fee, plus 10 million in bonuses. Again, the magic number of 100 million.
Again, Leipzig said no.
A domino in Madrid, a jackpot in Leipzig
The equation in Madrid could change quickly. If Brahim Diaz leaves, Real’s pursuit of Diomande will only intensify. The Morocco international is considered a candidate for sale; Diomande, with his pace, flair and end product, would be a high-end replacement in the attacking rotation.
For Leipzig, that only increases their leverage. They have already shown they are prepared to walk away from huge money. The club are said to have rejected an offer from Liverpool worth around 100 million euros in total, mirroring the packages now being floated by City and Real.
The pattern is clear. Anyone who truly wants Diomande will have to go far higher. The expectation around Leipzig is that a serious offer would need to land in the region of 130 million euros.
That is the level at which a “mammoth task” might start to look possible.
PSG’s grip loosens
Not long ago, Paris Saint-Germain were considered frontrunners in this tug-of-war. The Champions League winners hold a major interest in Diomande and had been widely viewed as the leading favourites for his signature.
Even PSG, though, have balked at Leipzig’s valuation so far. The French giants have not yet been prepared to push towards the 130 million mark that would really test the Bundesliga club’s resolve.
Now the picture is shifting. If Real Madrid decide to keep bidding and Manchester City move from verbal promises to written offers, the transfer battle around Diomande could change shape overnight. What looked like a slow-burn pursuit risks turning into an auction.
Leipzig’s 20 million masterstroke
Leipzig’s stance becomes easier to understand when you look at the numbers on the pitch.
Signed last summer from CD Leganes for 20 million euros, Diomande tore into his debut Bundesliga campaign. Across all competitions he delivered 15 goals and 11 assists in 46 appearances, a return that instantly justified the investment and then some.
His progress did not stall on the international stage. At the World Cup he forced his way into Ivory Coast’s starting XI, becoming a regular and recording one assist in four games. The Ivorians went out in the round of 32, edged 2-1 by Norway and Erling Haaland, but Diomande’s status had already shifted: from prospect to proven performer under pressure.
That is the player Leipzig are fighting to keep.
With a contract running until 2030, the club hold all the cards. They are understood to be keen on offering Diomande a new deal on improved terms, both as a reward and as another layer of protection against Europe’s elite.
They paid 20 million euros for him. They now sit in a market where 100 million euros is waved away. The next move belongs to City, Real, PSG and anyone else who dares step in.
