Yan Diomande Prioritizes Liverpool Move Amid PSG Interest

Liverpool’s search for the next great wide forward has moved up a gear – and a 19-year-old from Leipzig now sits at the centre of it.

Diomande drawn to Anfield

Yan Diomande, fresh from a breakout year at RB Leipzig and a World Cup debut with Ivory Coast, is now “prioritising” a move to Liverpool, according to club reporter James William.

Liverpool, bruised by a disappointing 2025/26 campaign and entering their first full season without Mohamed Salah, are expected to reshape their attack under Andoni Iraola. Wide areas are high on the agenda. Diomande has quickly emerged as one of the headline options.

The teenager’s numbers in Germany have turned heads across Europe. Twelve goals and eight assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig, a season laced with direct running and end product. Over the campaign, he racked up 118 successful dribbles – 50 more than any other player, according to figures cited by Gabby Agbonlahor – and he has already carried that form onto the international stage, impressing for Ivory Coast against Ecuador at the World Cup.

Liverpool have been “pushing” to get the deal done, with Ivory Coast’s manager publicly indicating he has heard the winger is on his way to Anfield. William’s latest update on X underlines that direction of travel: Liverpool have made progress, Diomande is now leaning firmly towards Merseyside, and he is said to be convinced by Iraola’s project.

This is the type of profile Liverpool have long targeted: young, explosive, upward curve still steep.

PSG in the way – and Barcola in the background

There is, however, a familiar obstacle. Paris Saint-Germain are also in the race.

The French champions, never shy in the forward market, see the same thing Liverpool do: a 19-year-old with elite one‑v‑one ability and the numbers to back it up. Agbonlahor, speaking on talkSPORT, believes PSG’s pull and current form will ultimately prove decisive.

“I think he goes to PSG because of the way they’re performing at the moment,” the former Aston Villa striker said, before outlining a potential domino effect. In his view, PSG’s pursuit of Diomande could open the door for Liverpool to move for Bradley Barcola, valued at around £80m.

PSG already have a crowded stable of wingers. Agbonlahor expects them to cash in on Barcola if they land Diomande, freeing Liverpool to pivot from one highly rated youngster to another.

His assessment of the stakes is blunt. Diomande, he argues, would walk straight into Liverpool’s starting XI and looks the more natural goalscorer, while Barcola “likes to miss a lot of chances”. The comparison underlines the risk and reward at play: Diomande is the hotter prospect, the one PSG “will want”, but Barcola remains a serious alternative.

The financial backdrop matters too. Agbonlahor referenced Jadon Sancho’s £75m move to Manchester United as a warning of what happens when a huge fee meets a difficult adaptation. Any club paying top dollar for a 19-year-old wide forward knows it is stepping into that territory.

A pivotal call in Liverpool’s rebuild

What is clear is that Liverpool intend to come out of this summer with a new winger of genuine pedigree. Either Diomande, the dribbling phenomenon from Leipzig now edging towards Anfield, or Barcola, the £80m option who could be squeezed out of Paris if PSG win the first battle.

One way or another, the identity of the player hugging Liverpool’s right touchline next season will say plenty about how bold – and how accurate – their recruitment is in the post-Salah era.
