Wrexham's Heavy Defeat: Phil Parkinson's Call for Accountability
Phil Parkinson did not sugar-coat it. A 6-0 defeat to West Ham United, under the lights at London Stadium, goes straight into the file marked: worst nights at Wrexham.
His team were blown away by a West Ham side in full flow, outclassed and overrun. There was no hiding place, and Parkinson never tried to find one.
“Everyone has to take ownership of that performance, including myself,” he said, making it clear there would be no scapegoats, no easy excuses.
Accountability was his theme. He spoke about it repeatedly, almost like a promise.
“We’re going to make sure we have that accountability as individuals and as staff – and we will do,” he insisted. “And we'll respond and we've got to put the ingredients back in place very quickly to put in a better performance than we did tonight.”
This was the part that really stung him: the manner of the collapse.
“Tonight is the first night where we looked like we had a soft centre when it really mattered most and we've got to rediscover that,” Parkinson admitted. For a manager who has built his side’s rise on resilience and edge, that line cut deep.
He pushed back at the idea that Wrexham’s journey under him has been some kind of smooth, Hollywood script.
“We've had other days that have been really, really tough and everyone thinks it's been a complete bed of roses since I've been here,” he said. “We've had setbacks and each season I've been here we've had periods where it's not been going well and from the outside the team can look a little lost.”
The pattern, though, is one he trusts. They have gone off track before. They have found themselves again before.
“And then we've rediscovered what we're all about as a side,” he added, pointing towards the response rather than the wreckage.
Now, once more, they stand at that familiar crossroads.
“We've got to find a way back and give ourselves a chance. We need to show more character and resilience.”
The heaviest defeats leave the clearest questions. Parkinson has already set his: who in this group is ready to answer them?
