Tynan Thompson Joins Manchester United in £8m Deal
Manchester United have prised one of Tottenham’s most highly regarded academy products out of north London, completing a deal for winger Tynan Thompson worth up to £8million.
The 18-year-old, a standout for Spurs at youth level, has agreed a move to Old Trafford for an initial £4m, with a further £4m tied up in performance-related add-ons. The transfer remains subject to registration but marks a significant bet by United on a teenager yet to play a senior minute of Premier League football.

Thompson has been one of the brightest lights in Tottenham’s youth ranks. He scored seven goals in the UEFA Youth League last season and regularly operated off the left for the under-21s, where his direct running and eye for goal made him a regular match-winner.
But the pathway stalled.
Despite being named on the first-team bench three times in the 2025-26 campaign, the winger saw no real opening into Ange Postecoglou’s senior side and, according to Press Association, grew increasingly frustrated at the lack of opportunity.
The move is not purely footballing. Sources close to Spurs have indicated that personal family circumstances played a key role, with Thompson’s family expressing a wish to relocate to the Manchester area. The teenager has had to absorb a profound shock off the pitch as well, dealing with the sudden death of his father last November.
Tottenham have at least protected their position. The agreement includes a sell-on clause believed to sit between 15 and 20 per cent, as well as matching rights that could allow Spurs to bring Thompson back in future if United decide to sell.
United, for their part, have framed it as a long-term investment in an attacking talent who has already shown he can dominate at youth level. “Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future,” the club said in a statement, as they add another young wide option to a squad already being reshaped around emerging players.
For Tottenham, it is a painful reminder of how quickly an academy jewel can slip away. For Thompson, it is a clean break, a new city and a club that has staked hard cash on the belief that his next step will be onto the biggest stage.
Villa reinforce midfield with £38m Joao Gomes signing
While United move for potential, Aston Villa have paid for the finished article.
Brazil international Joao Gomes has joined Villa in a deal reported at £38m, ending his three-and-a-half-year stay at Wolves. The 25-year-old midfielder, capped 10 times by his country, leaves Molineux after 130 appearances following his arrival from Flamengo.
At Wolves, Gomes built a reputation as the heartbeat of midfield: aggressive in the tackle, relentless in his work off the ball, tidy and disciplined in possession. He leaves with the blessing of the club hierarchy.
“Joao deserves everything he gets from the game. He's the type of professional that coaches love and players love, so he will go on to be the outstanding player that we know he is,” said Wolves technical director Matt Jackson, summing up the respect Gomes commanded in the dressing room.
Villa’s move comes at a critical moment. Youri Tielemans has departed for Manchester United and Morgan Rogers is on the verge of a £117m switch to Chelsea, stripping Unai Emery of two significant pieces of his attacking and midfield structure.
Gomes arrives as the response. A player in his prime, with Premier League experience and the mentality to anchor a side with Champions League ambitions.
United have gambled on tomorrow with Thompson. Villa have paid for today with Gomes. The next few seasons will show which strategy cuts deeper into the Premier League’s shifting hierarchy.
