Tottenham Break Transfer Record to Sign Alice Sombath from Lyon
Tottenham have made their biggest statement yet in this summer’s rebuild, breaking their transfer record to sign France international defender Alice Sombath from Lyon.
The fee is officially undisclosed, but it eclipses the deal that brought Norway midfielder Signe Gaupset to the club for around £375,000 last year. For a club that has been edging its way towards the Women’s Super League elite, this is a move that shouts intent.

“I want to do my best here at Tottenham. I think the league is very competitive, every game is tough and that's what I'm most excited about,” she said, outlining exactly why the WSL has become such a magnet for top European talent.
She has watched Spurs from afar, too.
“I saw that Spurs had a very good season last year. My qualities can bring something to the team, even though I know they already have a lot.”

Sombath’s journey has taken her through some of France’s most demanding academies. She came through Paris FC, then moved into the youth system at Paris St-Germain, before Lyon snapped her up in 2020.

Her international record underlines her rise. Sombath has represented France at every age group from under-16 level to the senior squad. At Euro 2025 she featured in all of France’s matches, starting three group games, a sign of the trust already placed in her on the biggest stage.
Tottenham manager Martin Ho did not hide how long the club have had her in their sights.
“She’s a player we've followed closely for some time and one who fits the profile of what we're building here,” he said.
“She has already shown real maturity in her performances, and we believe she has all the qualities to continue developing into a top player within our environment.
“Alice is an aggressive defender who is comfortable in possession, competitive in her duels, and has the ambition to keep improving every day.

Spurs move early – and decisively
This is not a one-off splash. Sombath is the headline act in a carefully planned window that has seen Tottenham move quickly to secure their main targets.
Shekeira Martinez, Kirsty Hanson, Victoria Pelova, Caitlin Dijkstra and Selma Panengstuen have all arrived, giving Ho depth and variety across the pitch before the season kicks into gear.
