Tottenham Faces Brentford in Premier League Opener Without Key Players
Tottenham head across London to Brentford for their Premier League opener carrying a strange mix of excitement and anxiety: fresh faces everywhere, but several pillars missing.
New captain Micky van de Ven will not be there to lead them out. The defender, handed the armband for the new season, did not feature at all in pre-season after extended post‑World Cup leave, and Roberto De Zerbi confirmed on Friday he will not even make the squad for the trip.
The news is no better for his deputy. Vice-captain Pedro Porro is also ruled out, leaving Spurs without both of their designated leaders on day one of the campaign. Pape Matar Sarr joins them on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring problem. The issue is not considered serious, but it is enough to keep the midfielder out this weekend.
Spurs do at least travel with some encouragement. Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke and Mateus Fernandes all trained ahead of the short journey to west London. De Zerbi said they would be “inside”, a clear hint that all four are in line to be included in the matchday squad.
The spotlight inevitably falls on Fernandes. The £85m summer signing from West Ham has been battling a calf problem since joining up with the squad on their pre-season tour of New Zealand and Australia. He is not fit enough to start against Brentford, a reminder that his full introduction will have to wait.
De Zerbi has chosen caution over risk with his injured players, shaped by the memory of last season’s fitness crisis that ripped through the squad. On opening day, Tottenham will lean on their depth, their debutants and their nerve, while their new captain waits for his turn to actually lead them on the pitch.
