Timothy Ouma to Miss West Ham Clash as Charlton Focuses on Fitness
Charlton Athletic will be without Kenyan midfielder Timothy Ouma again this weekend, with Nathan Jones insisting the 22-year-old is still some way from being ready for the intensity of the Championship.
Ouma, on loan from Slavia Prague, will not feature in Saturday’s clash against West Ham at the London Stadium as the club continue to build up his fitness after a heavily disrupted pre-season.
“A work in progress,” is how Jones summed him up. The phrase hung in the air – not critical, but clear.
Delayed Start, Delayed Impact
Ouma’s summer never really got going. Visa issues kept him in Kenya longer than planned, delaying his return and costing him crucial weeks of conditioning and tactical work with his new teammates.
“He has hardly trained and had visa issues early on,” Jones explained. “That wait prolonged us from being able to bring him back over from Kenya, so he has missed a lot of pre-season, and we are building him up. It is a work in progress.”
The club have started that rebuild at U21 level. On Tuesday, Ouma played 45 minutes for Charlton’s U21s against Bolton Wanderers. Jones was encouraged, but not convinced that it translates yet to senior football.
“Ouma was fine the other day in the U21s,” the head coach said, pointing to that run-out. Reports from the game described him as composed on the ball, with one stray pass sparking a Bolton counter-attack but little else to alarm the staff.
For Jones, the gap between that environment and the Championship remains too wide.
“The intensity of a Championship fixture and an U21s fixture are vastly different,” he said. The message was blunt: talent or not, there are no shortcuts to the physical and tactical demands of the league.
So, after missing the season opener against Derby County, Ouma is expected to be a spectator again this weekend, watching on rather than dictating play.
Sichenje Steps Up as Ouma Waits
While Ouma waits for his chance, another Kenyan is already edging into Jones’s plans.
Collins Sichenje, who came off the bench for the final five minutes of Charlton’s 2-1 win last weekend, is set to be included in the squad that travels across the capital to face West Ham.
It underlines the contrast in their situations. Sichenje has the minutes in his legs and a foothold in the matchday group. Ouma, for now, has only a half of U21 football and a manager determined not to rush him into a level he isn’t ready to handle.
Jones Relishes Premier League-Level Test
If Ouma’s story is one of patience, Saturday’s is all about ambition.
Charlton head into a daunting tie against a West Ham side that Jones still views through a Premier League lens, despite their recent relegation.
“It’s a wonderful game to test ourselves against a Premier League club, really. I know they came down, but everything about them is Premier League,” he said.
He rattled off the reasons: “The stadium, the crowd, the finances... they have managed to keep the majority of their players and add, so arguably they are as strong as they were last year.”
The challenge is obvious. So is the appeal.
“It’s a tough fixture, it’s great for the fans, it’s a short journey,” Jones added. “We wanted to test ourselves; this is why we want to be in at least the Championship. Games like this... are what whet the appetite.”
For Charlton, the London Stadium will be a measuring stick. For Ouma, it will be another reminder of the level he is chasing – and how ready he must be when his moment finally comes.
