Thilo Kehrer Joins Ajax: A Fast-Paced Transfer Journey
Thilo Kehrer didn’t just change clubs on Deadline Day. He jumped into chaos – and loved it.
“That was a first for me. Very exciting, it was different. I’m happy to be here,” the German centre-back told ESPN, still sounding energised by a move that came together at breakneck speed.
A Transfer Done in Fast-Forward
Kehrer only heard of Ajax’s interest the day before the deal went through. No long courtship, no drawn-out saga.
“Everything happened very quickly: talks with Jordi (Cruyff), with the coach. After that, the clubs wrapped it up. The next day I was on my way.”
One conversation, then another, and suddenly he was packing for Amsterdam. No time for second thoughts.
The welcome committee arrived almost immediately. Not from Ajax, but from another German voice in the dressing room: Marc-André ter Stegen, on loan from FC Barcelona.
“Soon after completing the move, I got a message from Marc-André ter Stegen,” Kehrer said. He didn’t need a sales pitch. “I didn’t need to ask much. I already knew Ajax very well. I played for Schalke, not far from here. Everything was already very clear.”

Kehrer insists this was not a leap taken lightly. Before saying yes, he weighed what Ajax could offer at this stage of his career after arriving from AS Monaco.
“The most important thing for me is to be competitive and to play for titles, to have the ambition to win trophies and matches. That is possible here. The foundation is there, now we have to make it work.”
That word – foundation – matters. Ajax are rebuilding, but the defender sees enough structure to believe he can fight for silverware rather than just minutes.
The first impression in Amsterdam hit him hard.
“The scale, the stadium, the atmosphere and the pure football. The club have their own DNA.”
You don’t hear him talk about lifestyle or city buzz. It’s football that hooks him: the way Ajax want to play, the identity that has pulled in generations of players.
Contract Now, Future Open
Kehrer has signed on until mid-2027. A solid commitment on paper, but he refuses to look that far down the road.
“I don’t know yet. We’ll see how the season goes, but I’m certainly open to it. There are still many matches until next year. We’ll see.”
No grand declarations, just a clear openness to stay if this season delivers what he came for: competition, trophies, meaningful games.
Familiar Faces, Faster Integration
New club, new league, new demands – but not everything is unfamiliar. His time at Monaco has already paid off in the Ajax dressing room.
“Already knowing Caio Henrique and Simon Adringa from my time at Monaco has also helped me settle in. It makes it easier when you have familiar faces. They help you integrate. You already have a connection. It was nice to see them again.”
There’s another layer of familiarity too. Kehrer has crossed paths with Marc-André ter Stegen and Julian Brandt in the Bundesliga and with the German national team. Those shared battles and camps now turn into shared objectives in Amsterdam.
Ajax have their defender. Kehrer has his stage. The contract runs to 2027 – the real question is how quickly he can turn that “foundation” he talks about into something that looks and feels like a team chasing titles again.
