Southampton Signs Divin Mubama on Loan After Shea Charles Departure
Southampton answered one major departure with an immediate attacking statement, sealing a season-long loan for Manchester City striker Divin Mubama on the same day Shea Charles left for Fulham in a £30m deal.
It is a bold pivot. Out goes a highly rated Northern Ireland midfielder, in comes a 21-year-old centre-forward with a growing reputation and a point to prove at Premier League level.
A striker with scars and pedigree
Mubama arrives at St Mary’s off the back of a mixed year at Stoke City. He found the net five times in 28 appearances, a respectable return that was abruptly checked in January when a ligament injury halted his momentum after a 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers. Stoke boss Mark Robins did not mince his words at the time, calling the challenge that caused it “terrible”.
Those months on the sidelines slowed him, but they did not stall his rise.
A product of the West Ham academy, Mubama broke through in east London before his switch to Manchester City in the summer of 2024. He played 18 times for the Hammers, eight of those as a substitute in the Premier League, and was on the bench when West Ham lifted the Europa Conference League in June 2023. He did not get on the pitch that night, but he has already lived the rhythms of a European final.
City moved for him as a project player. Pre-season has hinted at why.
On their tour of Asia earlier this month, Mubama scored against Inter Milan and the K-League All Stars, then added an assist in a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Seoul on Sunday. Against high-level opposition, he looked sharp, aggressive, alive in the box.
“I’ve just come back from a pre-season where I’ve scored goals. I’ve been playing, I feel really fresh, I feel sharp, so I’m just really excited to get going,” he told Southampton’s website.
“With the way this team plays, when you’ve got players around you that have that much quality, you will be served. It’s up to you whether you put the ball in the back of the net, and that’s what I’m here to do.”
Southampton’s calculated gamble
For Southampton, this is not just a numbers move after Charles’s exit. It is a stylistic one.
Sporting director Johannes Spors made that clear: “As soon as we knew about Divin’s availability we acted quickly to bring him here, not just because of his incredible goal scoring ability, but because of his work ethic and hunger to help the team, which will be vitally important this season.”
The language is deliberate: work ethic, hunger, goals. This is a player expected to press, run and finish, not simply wait for service.
Southampton’s attacking patterns should suit him. A team that creates chances but has at times lacked a ruthless edge in front of goal now hands the responsibility to a young striker who has spent his formative years around demanding environments at West Ham and Manchester City.
He has felt the cut of a serious injury. He has watched a European final from the bench. He has just come off a summer scoring for one of the most relentless clubs in world football.
Now he walks into a dressing room that has just waved goodbye to a £30m asset and needs new heroes.
Southampton have given Mubama his stage. The question now is whether he can turn promise and pre-season form into the cold, decisive currency of goals when the Championship grind begins.
