If only South Korea had shown that same edge where it mattered.

On the pitch, the performance lacked that bite, that aggression, the urgency of a side fighting for its World Cup life. South Africa were sharper, more decisive, and fully deserving of the win that left the Asian side staring at an early exit.

The wait for Son Heung-min only underlined the mood. Selected for doping control, the captain did not emerge to speak until more than two hours after the final whistle. When he finally appeared in front of the Korean media, he was calm, deliberate, determined to shut down talk of a fractured camp.

“There’s no problem with the vibe in our dressing room,” he said. “I can honestly tell you that we’ve had zero issues with our team atmosphere.”

His words pushed back at the narrative, but they could not disguise the numbers. Three group matches. Three points. A negative goal difference. And yet, in this swollen version of the World Cup, South Korea still stand a chance of sneaking into the knockouts.

It is a damning reflection on the expanded format that such a modest return might still be enough. But the table does not care about aesthetics or pride. The question now is whether South Korea can find, in 90 minutes on the grass, the same fire that briefly flared in a hallway in Monterrey.
