SCO Angers Face Goalkeeping Crisis as Max-Edgar Chabot Moves to Manchester City

SCO Angers are bracing themselves for another blow in goal. This time, it is not a seasoned No.1 slipping through their fingers, but a teenager they had hoped would grow into the role for years to come.

According to Le Parisien, 18-year-old goalkeeper Max-Edgar Chabot has turned down his first professional contract with the club and is now closing in on a move to Manchester City. Nothing has been signed yet, but an agreement is described as being possible within days. When City circle, hesitation rarely lasts long.

For Angers, it deepens an already awkward summer in the goalkeeping department. Hervé Koffi, outstanding on loan from RC Lens last season, looked like the obvious long-term solution. He dominated his box, carried himself like a leader, and quickly became a crowd favourite. Angers wanted to keep him. The numbers said no. Priced out of a permanent deal for the Burkina Faso international, the club were forced back into the market.

They turned instead to Anthony Lopes, available as a free agent after the end of his contract at FC Nantes. A pragmatic move, a veteran presence, a safe pair of hands to steady the position. But while Lopes offers experience, he does not solve the question of succession.

Formed at Angers and already trusted at U19 level, the young goalkeeper had been earmarked as one of the academy’s brightest prospects. Chabot was part of the France U17 squad at last autumn’s U17 World Cup, a stage that routinely doubles as a global scouting fair for Europe’s biggest sides. Manchester City clearly took note.
