SC Cambuur Supporters Injured by Fireworks During Match

SC Cambuur say several of their supporters suffered burns, hearing damage and eye injuries after fireworks were hurled from the Feyenoord end during Sunday’s league match in Leeuwarden.

The game at the Kooi Stadion was halted for around 10 minutes in the first half when a large number of red flares were lit in the away section and fireworks were thrown. Some of those were launched towards areas holding home fans.

Cambuur later confirmed that five supporters had been injured.

In a strongly worded statement, the club condemned the scenes, calling the use of fireworks inside the ground “completely unacceptable” and insisting such behaviour “has no place in a football stadium whatsoever”. The Eredivisie newcomers, promoted last season after three years in the second tier, said they will work with authorities to identify and punish those responsible.

Feyenoord also moved quickly to respond. The Rotterdam club said it “firmly distances itself from the unacceptable events” and revealed that head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who served as Arne Slot’s assistant at Liverpool last season, apologised to SC Cambuur after the final whistle on behalf of the club.

Feyenoord added that they will request access to camera footage as part of efforts to track down the culprits, as Dutch football once again confronts the question: how do you keep passion inside the stands without letting it spill into real harm?
