Saudi Arabia's Gulf 27 Squad Announcement by Georgios Donis
Saudi Arabia head coach Georgios Donis is set to reveal his Gulf 27 squad on Wednesday, as the Green Falcons brace for a home tournament loaded with pressure and history.
The 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup kicks off in Jeddah on 23 September and runs through to 6 October, with Saudi Arabia chasing a title that has eluded them for 23 years. Their last triumph dates back to 2003, a drought that hangs over every selection call Donis makes this week.
According to Saudi channel Al-Ekhbariya, the Greek coach will announce his final list the day after tomorrow, exactly one week before the opening whistle in Jeddah. That deadline comes with complications.
His captain and talisman, Salem Al-Dawsari, is already ruled out through injury. The loss strips Saudi Arabia of their most experienced attacking reference point and the man so often trusted to unlock tight games. Right-back Saud Abdulhamid is also a doubt and could miss the tournament, leaving Donis to rethink both his defensive balance and leadership structure on the pitch.
The draw has offered no easing-in period. Saudi Arabia sit in Group One alongside Iraq, Oman and Kuwait, a quartet steeped in Gulf Cup tradition and rivalry. Only the top two teams will reach the semi-finals, turning every group match into a high-stakes test for a side under the spotlight on home soil.
Donis now walks a fine line: refresh the squad to cope with key absences or lean on continuity in search of long-lost silverware. In a week, his squad list will show exactly how bold he is prepared to be.
