Ryanair Flight Incident: Passenger Almost Sucked Out Mid-Flight

A Ryanair passenger was almost sucked out of a shattered window mid-flight on a route from Greece to Germany, before fellow travellers dragged him back to safety.

The drama unfolded shortly after takeoff from Thessaloniki on a flight bound for Memmingen, when a window reportedly detached in mid-air, triggering sudden decompression inside the cabin.

Most people were asleep.

Then came the sound.

“A noise, like a tire bursting,” a passenger told Radio Thessaloniki, as reported by AFP. Eyes snapped open. Oxygen masks dropped. Screams filled the cabin.

In the chaos, one man – a Serbian tourist – found his head and shoulders forced outside the broken window, held in place only by his seat belt as the pressurised cabin tried to expel everything in its path. Passengers nearby grabbed him and hauled him back inside.

He was later taken to hospital with friction burns, but officials said he was otherwise in good condition.

The incident is believed to have taken place in the skies over North Macedonia. Greek media reported that the window was smashed by debris that had detached from one of the aircraft’s engines, though full technical details have not yet been publicly outlined by investigators.

Inside the cabin, the sequence was brutally fast: the bang, the rush of air, the sharp smell, the masks dropping from the ceiling. For a moment, one passenger thought someone had opened an emergency exit by mistake. Instead, they were dealing with a mid-air structural failure.

Ryanair confirmed the emergency in a statement, saying the aircraft “returned to Thessaloniki shortly after takeoff when a passenger window detached during the flight. The aircraft landed normally and the passengers returned to the terminal.”

No crash landing. No fire trucks racing to a runway littered with debris. Just a controlled return, the kind airlines train for but hope never to face.

Once back on the ground, the Irish carrier arranged a replacement aircraft to complete the journey to Memmingen, allowing the remaining passengers to continue their trip after what will likely be the most harrowing flight of their lives.

For one man, a seat belt and the reactions of strangers made the difference between a terrifying story and an unspeakable tragedy.
