Ruben Amorim's Reunion with Manchester United: A Pre-Season Showdown

Ruben Amorim and Manchester United: a reunion nobody planned, and few at Old Trafford will have forgotten.

Seven months after their stormy split, the former United manager now in charge of AC Milan walks back into the same orbit as the club – and several players – he left behind in acrimony. The setting is neutral, a pre-season friendly in Poland on Saturday at 15:45 UK time, but the subtext is anything but.

For Michael Carrick, this isn’t about old wounds. It’s about one last hard look at his team before the Premier League opener away to Hull.

This should be as close to his strongest available XI as fitness allows. Senne Lammens is expected to keep his place in goal. In front of him, Harry Maguire returns as the defensive leader, a role Amorim helped restore during his turbulent tenure.

With Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt still sidelined, Carrick has a straight choice next to Maguire: Leny Yoro or Ayden Heaven. Heaven, the young English centre-back, edges it in the internal battle for now.

On the right, Diogo Dalot is tipped to get the nod over Noussair Mazraoui in a contest that has quietly intensified this summer. On the opposite flank, Luke Shaw remains virtually untouchable at left-back.

In midfield, Mason Mount’s continued absence clears the path for the new pairing at the base: Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. The duo are expected to anchor the double pivot, with Bruno Fernandes operating in his familiar advanced role just ahead of them.

Up front, the injury to Benjamin Sesko forces Carrick into another repeat call. Bryan Mbeumo should once again lead the line. That opens the right wing for Amad Diallo, who enjoyed his best spell in a United shirt under Amorim. On the left, Matheus Cunha is likely to come in for Patrick Dorgu.

Old allies, old scars

When Amorim scans that United lineup, he will see familiar faces – and mixed memories.

Fernandes and Dalot, compatriots and key lieutenants during his 14 months at Carrington, are among those who will greet him warmly. Maguire, whose career at United seemed to be unravelling before Amorim helped steer him back towards form and authority, is another.

Amorim has long been an admirer of Amad. Under his watch, the Ivorian winger produced his most convincing run in a United shirt, finally looking like more than a promising prospect. His performances were strong enough that sections of the Italian media have already floated the idea of Amad following Amorim to Milan at some point.

But not every reunion will be pleasant.

Carrick’s bench is expected to contain players who were far from unhappy to see Amorim leave in January. Chief among them: Marcus Rashford.

If selected, Rashford could make his first United appearance in over 18 months against the very manager whose handling of him contributed heavily to his exit from the first-team picture at his boyhood club. The symmetry is brutal. The narrative writes itself.

Kobbie Mainoo’s story is different but just as pointed. Under Amorim, the midfielder found himself stuck on the fringes, reduced largely to a bench role. Since Carrick’s arrival, he has exploded into prominence, his rise a quiet rebuke to the previous regime’s judgment.

Then there is Harry Amass. During his time at United, Amorim once used Amass and Chido Obi as examples of struggling academy products. The comments did not land well. Both youngsters later posted cryptic – but clearly barbed – messages on social media, before swiftly deleting them.

Those words are gone. The memory is not.

A friendly with an edge

On paper, this is just a pre-season game in Poland. For Carrick, it’s a tactical tune-up, a final chance to test combinations before the serious business begins at Hull.

For Amorim, it is something else as well: a walk back through a recent past that ended badly, played out in front of players whose careers he shaped, stalled, or sparked into life.

United versus Milan will be billed as a glamour friendly. For several on both sides, it will feel like unfinished business.
