Rotherham United Sign Sonny Aljofree to Strengthen Defence

Rotherham United have moved to bolster their back line with the signing of former Manchester United defender Sonny Aljofree on a two-year deal.

The 22-year-old, comfortable both at centre-back and right-back, joins after his release from Old Trafford in the summer, with the Millers securing an option to extend his stay by a further year. It is a calculated punt on pedigree and potential rather than reputation.

Aljofree arrives with a solid grounding in elite youth football. He was part of the Manchester United side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in the 2021-22 season, a campaign that showcased a calm, composed defender in a high-pressure environment. That triumph, though, never translated into a senior appearance for the Premier League club.

Instead, his education continued away from the spotlight. Loan spells at Altrincham, Accrington Stanley and, most recently, Notts County gave him a taste of the senior game’s physical demands and unforgiving tempo. Those stints did not generate headlines, but they did something more valuable for a young defender: they hardened his game.

There is also a family thread running through the move. Aljofree is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, a name well known in the lower leagues. The younger Aljofree now follows a similar path, swapping the glamour of a top-flight academy for the reality of fighting for points and minutes in the EFL.

Rotherham have had a close look at what they are buying. Aljofree has been on trial with the club during pre-season, training with the squad and featuring in their preparations. The contract offer is a sign that he did more than just hold his own.

For the Millers, this is a low-cost, high-upside addition to a defence that needs depth and versatility. For Aljofree, it is something even simpler: a first real platform to turn youth promise into a senior career that belongs to him, not his past.
