Roony Bardghji Suffers Torn ACL: Impact on Transfer and Season

Barcelona winger Roony Bardghji has suffered a devastating torn ACL in his right knee, a brutal blow that wrecks both his season and his planned exit from the club before the close of the transfer window.

The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old Swede sustained the injury during training on Monday. Tests have revealed a complete rupture that will require surgery in the coming days, followed by a long spell of rehabilitation.

A move away from Barcelona had been gathering pace. Now it is gone in an instant.

From transfer talks to treatment table

The timing could hardly be worse for Bardghji. After talks with the club’s hierarchy, he had been preparing for a transfer before the window shuts on September 1. Interest had already arrived from across Europe, including the Premier League, with negotiations expected to accelerate this month.

Then came a cruel twist.

Just days before the injury, coach Hansi Flick had told Bardghji, according to ESPN, that first-team minutes would be extremely hard to find this season. The message was clear: look for a new club, somewhere he could play regularly.

To shield him from exactly this kind of risk, Barcelona left him out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. He did not step on the pitch. He still got hurt.

The ACL tear struck in training on Monday, ending any hope of a late-summer move and locking him into a season of recovery in Catalonia instead.

A painful repeat

This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this nightmare. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee, having suffered the same injury while at Copenhagen in 2024.

Barcelona signed him last summer from the Danish club in a deal worth around €2 million. His debut season in Spain brought 28 appearances in all competitions and two goals, but most of those minutes came off the bench. He was on the fringes, not at the heart, of the team.

That situation was only going to get tougher. The summer arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi pushed him further down the pecking order in the attacking positions. A transfer was not just an option; it was his route to meaningful football.

Now that route is closed.

Season on hold

With the window shutting on September 1 and a long rehabilitation ahead, any departure is off the table. Bardghji will undergo surgery shortly and then begin the slow, demanding process of recovery in Barcelona.

Instead of fighting for a place elsewhere, he will spend the coming campaign fighting to get his knee – and his career – back on track.
