One source described it as “derisory”, and City’s response has been swift and uncompromising: Rodri is expected back in Manchester to continue his recovery from minor back surgery, and he stays put unless the money is right.

City want around €80m (£68.5m). That is the valuation for a midfielder who has been the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s side, a cornerstone of title after title. Barcelona’s first bid fell miles short of that. City did not just reject it; they used it as a moment to restate their position.
Rodri, who has just one year left on his current deal, is expected to report back and continue his rehab as normal. No cut-price exit. No softening because of his desire to go home. If Barcelona want him, they will have to pay the going rate for one of the most influential midfielders in world football.

Barcelona know Rodri wants the move. They know personal terms are there. What they must now decide is how far they can stretch in a market that has repeatedly exposed the limits of their finances. Push hard for Rodri, and something else may have to give.
City plan for life after Rodri – but only on their terms
While City hold firm publicly, they are not blind to the possibility that this saga ends with their midfield general in different colours.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the Premier League champions are closing in on Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, with negotiations said to be in the final stages between the clubs. City are “on the verge” of an agreement with Lille, while talks with the player’s camp continue.
The plan is clear: wrap up the Bouaddi deal, then turn attention to more signings. That does not automatically mean Rodri is gone, but it shows City are preparing for every scenario. They are building the next version of Guardiola’s midfield while refusing to be rushed into dismantling the current one.
