Rio Ngumoha's Transfer Saga: Liverpool Retains Star Winger
Rio Ngumoha’s proposed switch from Liverpool to Bayern Munich has fallen apart just as quickly as it gathered pace, leaving one of Europe’s most coveted teenagers back at the centre of Anfield’s plans.
The 17-year-old winger, who arrived from Chelsea and burst through with a standout 2025/26 campaign, had emerged as a serious target for Vincent Kompany’s rebuilt Bayern. For weeks, the German champions worked quietly in the background, sensing an opportunity while Liverpool staggered through a difficult season.
Ngumoha, one of the few bright sparks in a dour year for the Reds, looked like he might be the next young talent to slip away. Reports in Germany claimed Bayern made him an “absolute priority” as competition on the left flank, with the club still smarting from missing out on £69m Barcelona signing Anthony Gordon.
The interest was real. So was the progress.
David Ornstein first revealed that Bayern were exploring a move, identifying Ngumoha as their primary option for the left side. Liverpool, for their part, made their stance clear: not for sale, and intent on strengthening their attack, not stripping it back.
Even so, the story did not stop there.
Florian Plettenberg then lifted the lid on just how far talks had gone. According to his information, Bayern and Ngumoha’s camp reached a full verbal agreement on Tuesday, 26 May, after weeks of negotiations. Kompany had personally spoken to the teenager and given the green light for the deal. This was no speculative enquiry. Bayern had their man lined up.
Then it broke.
Plettenberg reports that the deal collapsed on Thursday “for the time being”, ending Bayern’s immediate hopes of landing the Liverpool prospect. No fee had been agreed between the clubs, and the German side must now look elsewhere as they weigh up moves for other targets such as Johan Bakayoko’s PSV teammate Ismael Saibari and other wide options.
For Liverpool, the collapse of the agreement snaps the focus back to Merseyside and to a player many inside the club believe could save them a fortune in the market. Internal expectations around Ngumoha have been high for months, with figures at Anfield convinced he is on the brink of exploding at senior level.
He showed enough last season to justify that belief. In a side that often looked flat and predictable, Ngumoha brought direct running, sharp decision-making and a fearlessness that cut through the gloom. Even so, former head coach Arne Slot was criticised in some quarters for not using him more often.
That is where Andoni Iraola comes in.
The new Liverpool boss is expected to restore a front-foot, aggressive style at Anfield, the kind of high-tempo attacking football that suits a winger of Ngumoha’s profile. With the Bayern move on ice and the club resisting any sale, the path is suddenly clear for the teenager to play a central role in Iraola’s reset.
Bayern, under Kompany, had hoped to make him part of their own new era, a fresh, dynamic option behind Luis Díaz on the left. Instead, the “secret candidate” returns to the public stage in Liverpool red, his future once again tied to the club that plucked him from Chelsea’s academy and fast-tracked him towards the first team.
The tug-of-war may not be entirely over – elite talent at 17 never stays under the radar for long – but for now, the collapsed agreement hands Liverpool a second chance.
What they do with it under Iraola could define the next phase of Ngumoha’s career.
