Reiss Nelson's Potential Move to West Ham: Arsenal Open to Exit

Reiss Nelson’s Arsenal career is edging towards its crossroads, and West Ham are trying to be the ones waiting at the junction.

The 26-year-old winger is in talks over a move to east London, with Arsenal and West Ham negotiating a deal that would take him into a Championship promotion push rather than back into Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Nelson has spent the last two seasons living on the fringes of Arsenal life, sent out on loan first to Brentford and then to Fulham. He returned to north London this summer, but the message from Arteta has been clear enough: there is no meaningful role for him in the upcoming campaign.

West Ham have sensed the opportunity. Eager to add proven quality out wide as they gear up for a tilt at promotion, they have approached Arsenal to test the waters on Nelson’s availability. The response from the Emirates has been positive. Arsenal, with the winger now into the final year of his contract, are understood to be keen on the move and have given encouragement to the Hammers during early talks.

The deal, though, is not straightforward. Negotiations between the clubs are ongoing, with the structure and conditions of any agreement still being thrashed out. And one major question remains unanswered: does Nelson actually want to drop into the Championship at this stage of his career?

Personal terms have not yet been discussed. Nelson is still weighing up his options, aware that this decision could define the next phase of his career after years on the periphery of Arsenal’s first team.

There is interest from abroad. A Portuguese side, now managed by Marco Silva – the coach who took Nelson to Fulham two seasons ago – are also in the picture. That link offers a familiar face and a proven working relationship, adding another layer to an already delicate situation.

From Arsenal’s perspective, the preference is clear. They would rather cash in this summer with a permanent sale than sanction another temporary move. There have been enquiries about taking Nelson on loan again, but if that route is chosen, the club hold an option to extend his contract by a further 12 months to protect his value and avoid losing him for nothing.

Nelson is not the only potential departure. Arsenal are also open to selling Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira before the window closes. The Gunners want up to £20million for Jesus, who has been linked with Napoli, though no formal approach has arrived from the Italian club at this stage. Vieira’s future is similarly in play as Arsenal look to streamline a squad built for a title challenge.

Tommy Setford is another name on the outgoing list, albeit in a different bracket. Arsenal are working to secure a loan move for the young goalkeeper to guarantee regular first-team football this season, a step seen as crucial to his development.

For now, the spotlight stays on Nelson. A talent once tipped to break through at Arsenal is again on the move board, his next destination still undecided. West Ham want him for a promotion fight. Portugal offers a reunion with a trusted manager. Arsenal, quietly but firmly, are ready to move on.
