Real Madrid's Pursuit of Josko Gvardiol: A Defensive Rebuild

Florentino Pérez is not hiding his intentions. Real Madrid are heading for a defensive rebuild, and the president wants it done with heavyweight names, not stopgaps.

Ibrahima Konaté of Liverpool and Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan sit high on the list. But in the corridors of Valdebebas, another name keeps coming up with growing insistence: Josko Gvardiol.

Gvardiol’s pull: a “two-for-one” solution

According to AS, Gvardiol has already let it be known that he would welcome a move to the Bernabéu. That alone changes the tone of any negotiation. Madrid see the Croatia international as the ideal modern defender: technically clean, physically imposing, and tactically flexible.

Crucially, he offers something the club badly needs — options. He is an elite centre-back and a fully competent left-back. For a squad creaking under the weight of injuries and exits, that versatility looks like gold.

The situation at the back is fragile. David Alaba and Dani Carvajal have gone, Éder Militão is out with a long-term injury until late October, and Antonio Rüdiger’s physical issues are a constant concern. On top of that, Raul Asencio’s future is unclear. Strip it down, and Madrid are short of reliable, top-level defenders.

The left side is no safer. Fran García is widely expected to leave in the summer, while Ferland Mendy’s fitness remains a major doubt after yet another extended spell on the sidelines. Gvardiol, in the eyes of the hierarchy, patches two holes at once.

City dig in after Guardiola exit

The obstacle is not new: Manchester City, and their stance. The context, though, has changed.

With Pep Guardiola gone, City are determined not to show any sign of vulnerability in the market. Letting a 24-year-old cornerstone of their defence walk easily would send exactly the wrong message. The Premier League champions are reportedly readying a lucrative contract renewal offer, designed to bump up Gvardiol’s salary and shut down any thoughts of leaving the Etihad.

Money, however, is only part of the story. The defender’s desire to wear the white of Real Madrid looms over the whole affair. When a player of that calibre makes his preference clear, pressure builds — on the club, on the board, and on the dressing room dynamic.

Gvardiol is tied to City until 2028. On paper, that gives the English club a position of strength. In practice, City have a track record: they rarely block a player who genuinely wants out, as long as their valuation is met.

The price of ambition

And there lies the crux. City paid €90 million to sign Gvardiol from RB Leipzig in 2023. They will not allow him to leave for anything that looks like a bargain. Any deal will be heavy, and they know it.

Madrid, for their part, are ready to make a significant effort, but not at any cost. Inside the club, there is a clear line: they will not pay what they consider an “out-of-market” fee, even for a defender who could anchor their back line for the next decade.

So the numbers game begins. Madrid will continue to run the calculations, measuring what Gvardiol’s arrival would mean for the squad’s structure and long-term wage bill. They want him, badly. They just refuse to be drawn into a bidding war that blows up their financial plan.

City still hold the contract, the asset, and the leverage. Madrid hold the allure, the history, and a project that often proves irresistible to players at the peak of their ambition.

What tips the balance now is Gvardiol himself. If he pushes, if he makes it clear he sees his future in Madrid rather than Manchester, the pressure on City will intensify. If he doesn’t, the Premier League champions can sit tight and point to 2028.

For Real Madrid, this is more than a transfer chase. It is a test of how far they are willing to go — and how much City are prepared to bend — for the defender they believe can anchor the next era of the Bernabéu.
