Real Madrid's Centre-Back Dilemma: Asencio's Return and Transfer Market Implications

Real Madrid opened their 2026-27 campaign against Espanyol with a win, but the victory came with a clear warning sign: they are walking a tightrope at centre-back.

Jose Mourinho went into the game with Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen as his starting pairing, Antonio Rudiger held in reserve, and La Fabrica defender Mario Rivas promoted to the bench. Eder Militao and Raul Asencio were both unavailable, stripping the squad of depth in the heart of defence on the very first weekend of the season.

Asencio’s situation has been complicated for months. Told he was not part of Mourinho’s plans for this campaign, the academy graduate was widely expected to leave during the summer. Then came the twist. In July, during a training session, he suffered an injury that appeared to shut down any immediate exit and was initially expected to sideline him until September.

Now the timeline has shifted again.

According to Diario AS, Asencio is already back in training with Real Madrid and is projected to rejoin full group sessions later this week. If he hits that target, he is expected to be in contention for a place in the matchday squad for next weekend’s league fixture against Malaga.

For Mourinho, the timing could hardly be better. Real Madrid face three matches in eight days, a demanding run for any squad, let alone one light in central defence. Konate and Rudiger are too important to be rolled out as starters game after game in such quick succession, especially with the risk of muscular problems so early in the season. That is where Asencio’s return becomes critical. If he is available on Sunday against Malaga, he gives Mourinho another senior option to manage minutes and reduce the physical load on his first-choice defenders.

Yet his comeback also reopens a door that had seemed to be closing.

By returning ahead of schedule, Asencio once again becomes a viable name on the market in the final days of the transfer window, which shuts on Monday. Clubs who backed away when he was injured can look again. Real Madrid, who had already informed him he was not central to Mourinho’s plans, could now consider late offers.

The player, though, has been firm. He has no intention of listening to proposals, no desire to walk away from the club at this stage. That stance could be tested if he spends the next weeks on the fringes, watching Konate, Rudiger and others take the key minutes in his position while he waits on the bench.

For now, Asencio is fighting on two fronts: for his place in Mourinho’s rotation, and for control over his own future. By next week, we will know if he is still doing both in a Real Madrid shirt.
